Sorry to hear that. I'm 53 and it took me over 18 months to land my last sales job, which ended after 6 months. Back at it again. Ageism is rampant in the hiring process. I'm invisible at 53, at 68....you're dead. Is there anyway you can take your experience and become a sales consultant? That may be the only thing that might have some traction for you at your age.
That is a reality we all deal with at our ages. If you're as good as you think you are in sales with all that experience much like I am than seek an independent agent type of job they're less inclined to care about your age only your results. Which is really one of the reasons we get into sales to begin with. We want to get compensated according to our production not according to our age or how attractive we are or anything else a superficial is this.
To avoid the ageism image you have of a prospective employer, do your research and find a company that employs and values older workers. There’s plenty of them. Change your mindset to work for less but ask what the increase opportunities are and be willing to reinvent yourself. Stop using ageism as an excuse and start leveraging your abilities and immediate value you bring from experience. Go for sales jobs in RV’s , boats, cars, retail. Go to a Costco and watch what the road show sales folks do…..so many opportunities….you’re not looking outside the box. Good luck!
A few of my colleagues in your age group were hired as 1099 independent contract Sales Representatives. These positions tend to value long term relationships and experience. Go for it!
What industries has your experience been in?
Unfortunately there is a lot of ageism out there and even though you may not be able to retire at this point (or even soon), you are still going to be viewed as someone on the brink of retirement. i think you have to rely on your network, people who know you and your character well. You can't just cold apply without having people raise their eyebrows at your age.
Ageism is very real. I'm 58 with more than the 10-15 year work history recommended on resumes. For 30 years I worked in the same industry with a plethora of knowledge/exposure from manufacturing, B2B & B2C sales, wholesale distribution, retail sales, e-commerce project management and freelancing on my own. I want to STAY with what I'm passionate about and have extensive knowledge in. It's really a lifestyle for me and never had a j.o.b. There's a new dog-n-pony show with resume creation recommendations every few years or so and this time around, it's really over the top with algorithms, keywords etc. I'm hoping to get noticed now that the holidays are over (been on the hunt since 11/12/24) but at 58 years old I'm either ghosted after video interviews or no response at all to my applications. I'm so sick of writing cover letters that I now use chatgpt and cover letter aps which helps my sanity. I'm petrified that I will run out of money before landing another company in my field. ~ heavy sigh ~
I work as a fundraising agent for charities have you thought about doing this until the right job comes up?
Dye your hair and show them 20 yrs of experience not 40
Watch the Intern with Robert De Niro or Internship with Owen Wilson - might make you feel better. And remember say this everyday "there's no school like the old school and I'm the f....... headmaster"
Sales 101 every no means you're closer to a yes, so keep on grinding ! Best, T
I have read that a lot of "kids" are also finding it challenging to find work, so don't be down on yourself, as it may not be age . The more experience you have the more they think they have to pay, so just go back 10 years on resume. Then if they call you for an interview show them your worth.
Don't Give Up Ever ! If you never give up you will eventually win ! TSS
What city do you live in? I can highly recommend Mondial’s fundraising and other cities have fundraising companies
I'm I. The same boat as you only a few years difference in age. Have you ever thought about hiring on as a temp from an agency or working for yourself? It may turn profitable . Good luck
Auto sales. Old guys are usually very successful. Maturity and patience are great qualities for big ticket sales.
While I agree that ageism plays a role in certain situations, IMO, it's less about age and more about presentation of yourself, your skillset & accomplishments that are recent, and your general 'way bout you' that plays a role. Most executives, especially in sales, whether in a leadership role or individual role, are typically older and more experienced.
Sadly it's a fact of life, I am 64, with 40 yrs experience in automotive industry mainly sales, apply for many jobs and don't get a reply..definitely age discrimination going on.
Look for something slower paced that values older workers
