I am a manager and my boss, currently going for partner, is changing cluster as there he has more chances.
He invited me to go with him. Should I go or should I stay in my cluster?what should i consider? Any advice on next steps?

- we are in consulting
- i have very good relationship with my boss’ boss, a partner (hence worried he might not be happy)
- new cluster is very close the one I am in, so no topic change
- do not know new cluster, not sure if it accelerates my senior manager case

Everyone going for partner is going for it until they’re not. Changing allegiance at this stage would indicate your boss is not close.

Stay put.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated! Would you stay put but still talk about the situation with boss’ boss or rather avoid the discussion altogether?

You talk to the boss boss about your career. Experienced partner trumps a SM/D any day of the week. There are no guarantees on your boss making partner.

Thanks!

Stay where you are, talk to boss’ boss and take soon to be old boss’ role

Changing clusters and moving to a different tree isn’t making the case for partner unless he is aligning with someone that has more clout and is a “king maker”. You would not be asking us if that was the case. I would highly recommend you to stay where you are. He is looking for you to move and then help him make his case.

I wouldn’t move with someone who thinks they can make partner just because someone is retiring. We’re not in an industry where you can only get promoted when the person ahead of you leaves.

Unless you have really good connects now,if someone pulls you to go with them they usually take care of you

You can ask them this question and discuss if you can be a fast follow when they are settled and better aware of their situation

Anyone else just sitting around waiting for the ax to drop? I'm a soon to be 2nd year corporate associate who has seen work completely dry up. My utilization held pretty steady around 50% immediately after shutdown, but August was below 15 billables with no appreciable work in the pipeline. Aside from letting people know I'm available and doing pro-bono/CLE, it's starting to feel like a serious "covidcation" leading to termination.

Or "Maybe in 6 months!"

I'm testing SPHR in June. Any advice for securing the type of role I'm aiming for?
