I am an accountant (no CPA) with 10 yrs experience in large corporations. I was laid off from my last job and spent almost a year searching for a new job before I had to stop to take care of a personal matter. During this time, I have worked a part-time retail job. However, now I am ready to go back to a full-time job in my profession. But, I have a 2.5 year employment gap. How do I address this? How do I get the attention of recruiters? I am open to entry level roles if that's what it takes.

What were you doing during that 2.5 year gap? You can fill in that gap if you were you taking any classes, volunteering, taking care of someone, etc. When it comes up in an interview, Be Honest and Brief: State the reason (e.g., "I took a planned career break to focus on a personal health matter/caregiver responsibilities") and immediately pivot to the present.

Do some networking. Friends, family, collogues can all be a resource to help you out.

My first job in the accounting field was tin part thanks to a friend of the family. A friend of the family had recommended for a job that was about to open up at the company they worked at.

10 years experience and no one owes you a favor or at least a reccomendation? Networking has become so important these days to bypass the resume hell

Agree with above - put it in your resume clearly and concisely. “2.5 year intentional gap for X” and networking does go a long way in these circumstances

Although Amazon has instituted a hiring freeze and layoffs are probably on their way, I went through the loop for a security engineer position at AWS. Before I attended the final interviews, Amazon placed the hiring freeze and called me to ask if I wanted to go ahead or cancel my application. Losing two key accounts. Layoffs look pretty much inevitable. Any agencies hiring a Project Manager in the LA/OC area?

If I get laid off, I have a previous colleague that started a cybersecurity company. I would love to get involved on the business side of it. Any pointers on skills that are attractive in this realm for a startup? Would be mostly (if not all) federal defense contracting clients. I’m currently in Deloitte’s cyber risk practice but my background and passion is in accounting and finance, and business operations. Graduated in 2017 so still early career.

Out of curiosity. How would a company view a potential candidate who has a period of unemployment to study for the CPA. I am considering to start studying for the exam but I know I would need to leave my employer in order to give 110%. I am contemplating the idea of at least passing one part while employed. Then leaving my employer to study FAR. I am considering to leave my current employer anyways, so it’s more of how my future employer would view that lapse.
