Simple. Charge a day rate.
Your dentist won’t fill your cavity for free for you to see if s/he is capable doing such procedures.
I've provided a day rate to an interviewer who wanted a deck for a campaign theyre presently working on within 24 hours. They were furious I would even ask.
If anyone reacts like this, its a red flag not to work there.
From the other side - I can’t tell you how many candidates I’ve met who interview really well but completely blow the assignment. It’s invaluable to see how people actually do work and present it in a team environment, and shows you much more about how it would be to actually work with the person than just interviews. I get that it’s a pain in the ass and I always try to work with candidates if they have important deadlines to work around to be as accommodating as is reasonable.
Think about it like this - what’s worse, spending a little extra time to do the assignment, or taking a job only to get fired three months later because it turned out you weren’t qualified or a good fit?
@president1 I don’t think the industry does this as a generalization. I’m shocked at some incredibly well respected agencies within holding companies allowing this to become common practice. I would much prefer your alternative.
Give THEM an assignment.
I did an assignment and then waited two weeks for an update. HR rep was supposed to call on a Thursday. Made me wait. Then called on Friday to tell me I didn’t get the job? Ummm, what is it all even for anymore?!!?!
You guys should post their assignments on here if you can. I’m curious on what they are.
So sounds like you really want the job!
It’s always for a retained brand too. The last three jobs I got had me do that. I pushed back but this isn’t a market to do that in. It makes me feel gross and angry.
One of the suggestions I’ve seen people mentioned is to charge them a freelance rate for the work they’re asking you to do, and if they don’t want to pay then you shouldn’t do it. I know it’s easier said than done especially right now where jobs are hard to come by... but it’s not right for them to ask you to work for free!
In the past I’ve said I’m not working on a client of yours for free- pay me my rate and they hired me without the assignment. This economy, I’ll probably be told no and I really like the company. Still annoying and shady as hell
Can you insist on working on a hypothetical client then?
We all need to adopt the Paul Rand approach - towards the end of the post:

Wayfair makes you do assignments with 24 hour turn around times. It’s messed up.
And how do they expect that when you already have a job that keeps you well beyond 5pm? Hell, how do they expect that if you don’t even have a job?
Lol. Assignments. Ha. Don’t work for free.
Last job I refused. This job I want, so I’m just biting the bullet. But it’s ridiculous the shit they are getting away with right now.
