The owner of the company would come in at 5 pm on a busy night, and go to my AD partner (the only guy in the room) and whisper to him. About 10 minutes later he would sneak out and through the window the women of the creative team would watch him and the men of the account side pile into the owners car. They'd then send us snapchats from fancy happy hours while we stayed and worked. He'd consistently only congratulate males on the team for "award-winning work" that rarely ever won, as well as hand out his season hockey tickets to the same two guys every time, despite knowing one of the women on our team was a die-hard fan.
You mean like when I was told that there is a salary freeze by my male supervisor and only minutes later said male supervisor told me he has got to get a male counterpart on our team a raise because he has a family to raise? When I addressed the fact that many people are deserving of a raise, supervisor laughed and told that I made enough to support a single person. So to recap...male fathers deserve raises, but female singles make enough money to support themselves (we don't eat much). 🚫👪⁉🚫💰
My male boss told me I did not want to get promoted to director because it would require time away from my children.
I manage 4 direct reports who all do the same job. 3 are men, one is a woman. She makes the least $.
A male AAE (who reported indirectly to me when I was a VP), went over my and his own boss's head to tell the managing director of our office that I was "being mean" to him (I'd told him to redo a report that was bad), and instead of laughing out loud the MD launched an investigation into whether or not I was "mean" by slowly interviewing everyone in the office who had ever worked under me.
My best friend was told they weren't promoting her (again) because he was intimidated by her. 😑
My hr person asked if I knew of any female or "exotic" programmers that needed a job.
And if she's better than the other 3 and getting paid less, what are you doing as a manager to rectify that?
On the flip side, I had a friend who was told she could not get the raise she was eligible for after she had recently start showing a baby bump. When asked, director said "let's see if you come back after having a baby and then talk".
How is any of this "allowed"
[hands original logo design to manager] Manager: "Show this to Big Boss" Me: "I just did. He prefers this one over the one you designed yesterday." Manager: (pause) "Oh well you're a pretty female, he'll say yes to anything you show him."
What shitty agency has golf outings?
A female colleague that sits near me is on bench and all the male designers around her get asked to do work before her even though they are slammed with work. She always hears about projects second hand as the CD never approaches her first.
JWT trying to "mea culpa" the whole Gustavo thing?
Had a very senior male (global leadership role of a large agency) ask me if I was a virgin in a room full of people. Unfortunately no one in the room thought it was an inappropriate question. He proceeded to read my texts over my shoulder all night.
My male boss cooked up a below the target evaluation for me and then put me on PIP trying to get rid of me. I am the only female director in our department
"Looks bad"? Jesus Christ, it either is bad or it's not. You're insinuating that she's paid less because she's a woman, but you don't actually know why. Maybe she's less experienced that the other 3? Maybe she's less talented? Maybe she's weird and can't present to the client, so hasn't grown as fast? Maybe she isn't a very good negotiator? All of those could apply to men or women. This isn't a goddamned union job with a regimented pay system. It's a meritocracy based on the value one provides to the company through skill, talent, work ethic and experience. Sexism most definitely exists and should be called out, but looking for and finding it under every stapler is getting tiresome.
As a very junior employee, had a client who regularly made suggestive comments or "jokes" on email chains. SVP and CEO were usually cc'd. They never stepped in or did anything to curb his behavior. Needless to say I left that job.
When I got a cool opportunity a male colleague said it was because the boss had a crush on me. That wasn't the case, but I've felt gross about it ever since.
Brand strategist 1, hopefully you reported that. It's outrageous
