Yes
Story of my life.
Reckon your own self-worth and determine your reasons for going for it.
If you're from a 2nd tier firm the exit opps may not be all that different, esp. with you coming down into the associate level. otoh, if you are planning to stay in consulting eventually MBB will pay much more at the senior levels.
It's a stronger story for MBB if you're at a 3rd tier firm, with improved exit opps, and a more junior level at which MBB pay will exceed that of the corresponding level at a 3rd tier firm.
In terms of whether warranted, how long have you been an EM at T2/3? Plays a big difference. If under a year, then probably associate. If tenured EM, then maybe lateral as manager. Also, which T2/3 and what practice makes a difference.
In terms of should you do it, really up to your longer term plan.
Doesn’t sound like you’ll be commanding a great deal of respect if you accept. The idea that you’re inferior just because you gained your experience at a T2 is a poor one. The MBB is leveraging their brand to underpay you as a lateral hire.
While I agree with your assessment, it is pretty common practice for MBB (and top tech firms) to bring experienced hires down a level. It's another form of the brand premium if you will, and depends on what you are willing to put up with.
If they want / need you badly enough they'll aim to make the offer as attractive as possible.
For your sake, I hope you’re talking about McKinsey.
An Associate at BCG or Bain is the post-BA role—which definitely seems too junior if you’re currently a tenured people Manager.
