This is so real. I’m constantly asking myself, “Do I want this promotion or am I just afraid of falling behind?” I’m learning that success doesn’t always mean climbing, it can also mean staying where you thrive. But yeah, the pressure to always want more is exhausting.

This is such a real thought that I always have
Yes! The toxicity of the “growth mindset” is that doing your job well is not enough. I am with you, I am happy with my pay, save yearly adjustments and don’t want the stress and responsibility of being a leader. Whenever I say this, it’s like I am admitting to having the plague in corporate America.

Great point
Yes! I want to work a 42 hour week and not always be in catch up mode! It’s called balance!
You are right about that. You are there to do a job to the best of your ability. We have other interests and know that we have to work to live, not live to work. It's not that serious!
I think this is very normal and most people probably have this feeling at one time or another in their career journey. Think of it as seasons in life, sometimes you are in spring, growing fast, sometimes in summer, taking it easy.
My advice is to follow what brings you peace and contentment. It certainly does not have to be a work focused life. Much more important (assuming your financial situation is ok) to be happy day to day, then to be burning hard to get to the next level and be miserable over a long period of time. Being miserable for short periods of time to achieve a goal is a reasonable trade off, but just be clear about for how long and what you want to achieve. If not careful short time period becomes decades.
Yes, I like to think of it as “selective ambition”
I currently work for a company and they have been amazing! I literally get asked if I would like to move up but they never pressure me. It gives me freedom to say no and keep building my media company outside of work. Certainly a blessing.
Need to make sure then that you are at a company that honors that type of WLB or settling that some want.
I left the Big 4 after about 4.5 years because the model is up-or-out. I had no intention of ever wanting to put in the time commitment (and business development) it would take to make Sr. Manager, or Principal/Partner/Director.
I feel this so much—and I used to think it had to be a choice between peace and ambition. But it really doesn’t. The right role can give you both.
With AO (a division of Globe Life), I found a remote opportunity that lets me work with purpose, help families, and still have the freedom to actually live my life. No cold calling, no door-to-door, no lead buying—and promotions are based on your results, not burnout.
If you’re ever curious, I’m happy to share the overview. It completely shifted how I think about work-life balance.
It really annoys me that the media and people around us try to make us believe that being the CEO is the top job and ultimate goal. It isn’t for everyone (in fact, it isn’t for the majority).
I am a Founder (v small biz) and I don’t even want to grow because I don’t want to deal with people! So even I don’t want the CEO role 😂😂😂
Being happy is priceless - and enjoying life. Being out of debt. Having great people around you. Being healthy… etc.., you enjoy life. We never know how long we may be here for
There are so many simply adequate employees out there...performing to standard...that when over-performers/top-performers are hired, they (you) naturally stand out. It's a curse for greatness.
Pride is a dangerous thing. After losing a really good job, I find myself looking at job listings and thinking "I'm above that." "I've made more than that in the past." "I used to get better benefits." For too long we've placed value on our image and our success, and not on our comfort and happiness. We should be working to live, not living to work.
I am definitely stuck between the two but not for a logical reason, at least I don’t think it’s logical for the company I am working for at this time. We have zero and I mean zero process and procedure consistency or controls in place. Yet, based on the business user department if you don’t follow their unwritten rule of process for them you find yourself in the hot seat. This is not saving lives or solving for world peace this is from a lack of strong leaders in my department and therefore we are stepped on and told to adjust. My career here has been successful for being transparent while still focusing on getting the job done right the first time, in the least amount of time possible, and on par if not exceeding the businesses expectations. I’m bored and have taken on responsibilities to nurture and grow new team members and foster healthy relationships both with business departments and internal teams because seeing all of us work as cohesive group just makes life easier and better. Now where I am stuck is no matter how many times I’ve proven myself, no matter how many times I’ve gotten the recognition from business leaders, and other team managers, I am passed over for the actual title that would allow me to move into the role to nurture and create a sense of peace because we all work as a team not as individuals trying to throw each other under the bus. In fact there was just another individual promoted to the role which has maintained a reputation of stabbing people in the back, throwing others under the bus, and creating drama in the work place that only they are able to solve. So my career goal is to have the peace associated with knowing we are all trying to get to the finish line and it’s a team effort not an everyone for themselves.
I say that I highly value a positive company over pay.
The problem is if your content and don’t want to get that promotion and climb the corporate ladder your company is going to find someone younger and cheaper to do your job. It’s not right but unfortunately the truth.

This is a very valid way to exist. Work is there to pay the bills and shoudln't be your whole life
Yes! I have had so many of the same thoughts lately. Even been looking at jobs that I am overqualified for just to minimize some of the stress in my life of my current job.
