I spent most of my career chasing the dollar. Now I’m just happy to not work with assholes. Money isn’t great but the stress is low. I am thankful. I hope you find a better place soon. Bread is like $15 lol
I totally understand. I’ve worked for a few firms that paid decent but not as much as they should have with the case load that was assigned to me. Thankfully I finally found a good fit for me. The pay is good (could be better) but the stress is definitely lower and the attorneys are awesome. Although I enjoy where I am, I’m still open for new opportunities that will align my salary with my experience and worth. But if the stress is low, you’re winning!
I've been doing this for ~25 years. I find either you work for a$$holes and a big paycheck OR sweethearts and pennies. :(
Oh my gosh exactly. I have had only ONE attorney in my entire life as a paralegal that paid well and I loved working there. The attorney when she hired me even paid for classes for me at that time!! We cannot find attorneys like that anymore. If they are still out there I want to know where! Seriously, I will pack up, sell my home and move to work for that attorney. I am not kidding.
This is exactly why I left the field, after more than 20 years.
I get that completely. I have been in and out of the field. It’s the money always the money. But I will never again 1. answer their phones I did not go to school, get into a $58,000.00 debt with the government to be their receptionist. After I graduated from college that is where every freaking attorney put me. To answer their phones, except for one. A PI attorney. I respect him for that. I had my own office, good pay and the attorneys assigned to me were good especially the main one. Too bad they closed the department down. It was nice while it lasted.
I totally get this as well! It's ridiculous that I bill between $110--$150 an hour with decades of experience and savvy to only be paid close to half that! It will be why I'm revamping and being more creative to be paid what I'm worth! And get the 'asshat' and 'ego' dilemma as well, I won't put up with mistreatment.
We have to bring it to their attention and IF they TRULY VALUE you and your work and don't SETTLE on someone younger and cheaper but that's going to make mistakes or be on their phone half the day...! (my last experience, so maddening then she expected me to 'grab the phones' so she could take a break!) Too many youngers have poor work ethics when I don't take breaks and are there more hours than needed because that's how I was raised.
Hope you get some fairness!! :)
Yeah, I think if they want a receptionist they need to hire one so paralegals can focus solely on the work at hand. It is way to distracting to answers phones while trying to do Discovery work. Have to stop, change gears, the go back try to remember where the stopping point was and exactly what was being done and how far along only to have to answer another freaking call once getting into the flow again. That drags me down and it is a burden.
So true. Respect doesn't pay the bills or shorten the endless to-do lists. Sometimes managerial 'respect' feels like a trap—they make you feel valued just so you won't complain about the burnout and underpayment. Glad they are nice, but nice doesn't stop the stress
I don't see how that's any less disrespectful TBH.
Have you worked for attorneys as a paralegal? To understand the Paralegal you have to fully understand the office of a Paralegal.
I know I know. Many want so much but give such little pay but there are a few out there somewhere that literally pay well. I guess it’s we have to give up something. I hope it gets better for you in your pay. How long have you been there so far?
