Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

Sometimes failure is a necessary growth experience for a naive young person
Chief
Amen. If I could go back in time, I’d slap my younger self for being so naive
Sounds like the cousin got the wrong degree (besides graduating now)
Just give her time. She will either succeed or in 6 months when no one she’s interested in responds to her resume /application she will reach back out. It took me a year out of college applying for jobs to find a decent path to where I am. Colleges do a truly horrific job of preparing students for getting and retaining jobs. I was the first in my family to go to college and had no direction from the school at all on what to do.
Agreed it is lazy, but she may not think of it that way. Especially if she is actively searching for opportunities in the companies she is trying to get to. She might be putting a lot of time into that. She probably doesn’t realize the importance of networking. I enjoy networking but I didn’t realize the importance of referrals in job applications right away. I found out how much easier it was to get a job after I used a referral to get a job at Huron. Sometimes they just gotta figure it out for themselves.

I think this is mainly due to tiktok and people showing their lives at FAANG jobs. Or get a FAANG job with a liberal arts degree and stuff like that
Chief
Well, the real fools are the people who fall for the social media crap. Believe it or not, most people don’t make $500k on 20 hour weeks.

Where did she go to school? If she went to a top 20 college, breaking into tech with a liberal arts degree shouldn’t be too much of an issue. She’ll really need to prep, though.
Can’t speak for other tech but non-tech FTE entry level roles at Google are almost unheard of. I say “almost” but Ive never seen any in my 4 years there. (I’m a program manager on the tech ladder).
You were generous to give your time and advice but can’t blame you feeling like it was wasted!
I graduated political science. Could have worked at google. If she went to top university, encourage her. If not , tell her to network. It’ll work
Pro
Yep, same here. Lots of friends (including myself) went into consulting and finance with degrees like international relations, public policy, poly sci, econ, etc. You just have to be able to prove your quant skills (and/or tech skills) are up to par or that you at least have the raw talent. I have a lot of friends in tech now but can’t remember how many of them went straight from undergrad.

Having felt a number of old grouchy ladies, I don’t think you are one but you are a grown woman and no longer have time for that nonsense.
Have you explained to her
1.) the realities of the non technical state of the tech industry. It sounds like your cousin isn’t an SWE a majority of the lay offs were those in non technical capabilities
2.) How limited her degree is, and how she would be well served to utilize this opportunity?
It sounds like you haven’t clearly communicated the reality of the economy and your cousins skills. She simply put probably doesn’t have the necessary skills to work at MANGA as of now.
Oh I have. I told her about tech layoffs and I’ve tried to advise her over the last few years to get internships but she has wanted to focus on fun jobs while she was in college. Not blaming her but it certainly impacts her position today.
I’m not saying she can never work there I just think that it’s narrow minded to be closed off to networking conversations because they aren’t with people who work at Google or Meta
Pro
Meta doesn’t sound like a good place to go- massive layoffs

Zuck will always need someone to sniff test his 2-day fruit of the looms.
Google or meta with a poli Sci degree? Lol
