I feel like I’m killing it - working long hours, producing good analysis and deliverables - but my review was “average.” This review is my second, and my first was fat better. I’m feeling demotivated-

...and I can’t reconcile the reviews with how I feel I’m doing, not even after talking to my professional development coach. How do you all deal with a review that you think is unreflective of your work/abilities?

like

Just posting that I feel the same wveryone is saying that I've been performing at a level above but my review say otherwise so it's quite demotivating in that as far as Ive seen performance means very little (according to other ACs)

The only person that can answer your question is your project manager who filled out your review. This is a very transparent process. You can see all the comments exactly as filled out by them. Set up a meeting —> talk to them about each competency point where you seemed to have a disconnect. Based on my 7 yrs experience at the firm I can tell you ZSers are a bit passive aggressive and tend to avoid direct conflicts, so play close attention to less than neutral comments because those are the ones you need to improve on. Another thing to keep in mind is the trajectory. 2nd cycle review is generally filled very casually and really does not change anything in the broad scheme of things. As long as your trajectory has a good positive slope, you are good. All the best.

Have you talked to your project managers. They will have more direct feedback than your PD can give.

Our review system is somewhat artificially constrained, as well (in the range of available ratings).

ZS3 thank you so much - made me feel a lot better, and gave me actionable next steps. Cheers - enjoy your weekend

focus on comments and your overall trajectory rather than individual categories. it is widely known that the attribute ratings are wacky and it is a focus to fix this going forward.

Good is expected. Figure out where you can do better

Initial response without any real info is that you’re doing well but others are too. You’ve failed to differentiate. Or at least differentiate in front of the right people.

You might be doing okay on your project, but what else are you doing for the firm, practice, partners?

Good reply ZS3

I have $20k in savings, I owe $6,000 to my 401k loan, that’s the only loan I got. I am debt free otherwise except for my house. Should I use my savings to pay off? I initially took the loan to add to my home equity when I sell my house for a new house then covid hit.
