Unless you look like a homeless person on camera, nobody cares what you look like.
@Senior Scheduler,
I was going to respond that there are no societal expectations as long as you're not totally a mess but I guess people like Senior Scheduler exist and you can't wear a tshirt.
For everyone acting like on camera is just a lesser effort version of in person. Havent there been many studies proving that we (women) look at ourselves on camera extra critically and find it distracting?
PM1, you're making some asinine assumptions. Check yourself. The ones accusing others of something are usually the ones actually doing it.
I feel keeping the camera off is the height of rudeness and a big cultural problem at KPMG. We are in a people business. So many communications cues lost when audio only. I’m left to stare at an ugly, boring static image. Full hair and makeup not required. Just be a human being please.
Does KPMP approve of this message? (And identifying name)?
Everyone saying no one cares is full of it. Even if it’s subconscious, women who look “put together” get treated much more favorably. And for a lot of women that isn’t easy unless you have naturally straight/obedient hair and skin that looks bright and awake. The expectation for men just isn’t there / involves putting on a collared shirt.
Aren't you doing the same thing to men? Yes. Yes, you are. Get over yourself. Everyone wants to look their best out here.
Oh please - I am a female and it takes me 1-2 min to put basic makeup on.
"I care about how I present myself to the world because I would not have been promoted otherwise."
"Again you are overthinking how much people care about your appearance."
You're contradicting yourself.
As a bald dude I constantly have to worry about the glare from my forehead.
Honestly - put your camera on. It’s a low expectation. Nobody is expecting a fashion show.
Just don’t wonder why your career is stymied. No company wants a leader of hermits.
I disagree with you. Bare minimum you can do if you are mostly remote is to turn the camera on and allow some non verbal communication to happen
No one cares. You don’t need a full face of makeup. Just dress/look how you would if you were at work
Why are you not looking like you would in the office? You are still an employee when you are working from home?
For meetings that are within normal working hours, it is not professional to be off video.
Rising Star
I prefer having camera on for one or two calls a day but if it’s the same people (my team) it gets old and video calls take double the cognitive load of audio only
Underrated comment. The cognitive and emotional load is different for a screen full of faces staring at you than an in-person meeting. Not saying people should never be on camera, but I would love if we collectively gave people grace to be off camera and recuperate sometimes
This is a crazy idea take, you get the benefit of wfh the very minimum you can do is turn your camera on
Perfectly said.
I wonder why wfh is going away 😧
Can confirm, it’s super easy a bald dude
I second this. Let’s get all this anti bald hate stamped out!
What an absolute garbage take. Either conquer your insecurities or take the time to not look like a slob.
This is why we are being forced back into the office. SMH. Turning on camera is literally bare minimum
Life is hard isn’t it
Do a two minute version then. But a lot of visual cues are missed out without the camera being on. We are in the people business afterall.
Different people take different amounts of time to get ready. I don't think comparing this is the right metric. Camera on does make a difference in communication, even if subconscious, and especially when sitting behind a screen all day. It sucked getting ready every day to go to the office, some days worse than others. My take is you can skip some things or do things with hair that look good on camera that don't necessarily fly in person. So, I'll take being camera ready over being office ready. 🤷
This took me a while to both understand and accept--ultimately, you are rewarded for how you are perceived at work, some of that is based on the things you achieve, and a lot of it is based on the things people see. That applies to everyone, men or women, but women have more things to take care of to be put together. Coming from a woman with zero fashion sense or care, it probably took me too long to figure that out, but it is the reality. About 10 years ago, I hired a stylist who helped me figure out the right things to wear and went to Sephora and got a makeup consultation. It made a night and day difference for my career. Is it a little dumb and frustrating, yes... are you going to single-handedly change how things work? Probably not. So.... yeah, you probably have to turn on your zoom, and look put together when you are on camera.
Just put a filter on. 🤟
