Unless you look like a homeless person on camera, nobody cares what you look like.
@Senior Scheduler,
I was going to respond that there are no societal expectations as long as you're not totally a mess but I guess people like Senior Scheduler exist and you can't wear a tshirt.
For everyone acting like on camera is just a lesser effort version of in person. Havent there been many studies proving that we (women) look at ourselves on camera extra critically and find it distracting?
PM1, you're making some asinine assumptions. Check yourself. The ones accusing others of something are usually the ones actually doing it.
I really appreciate the opportunity to see people's lives. It grounds me as a manager to see a little kid run by in the background, a dog in the lap or a cat that won't leave the keyboard alone. It breaks the monotony of the workday and reminds me that we're all just trying our damn best.
Saying that, I created No Camera Mondays for my last company for a reason. The Sunday scaries are real and no one actually wants to be on camera at 9am on Monday morning.
Stay home and live on less. Nobody's forcing you to filter your way to success.
Drop it. Societal expectations for women is to be a house wife.
To be treated as equal, you should be equal.
And if you have your camera off, I would immediately assume that you are busy with something completely meeting unrelated.
Ultimately, think how good you have it; before COVID, not only you'd have to show for the meeting in person, but often you'd have to travel half a world away for that meeting.
And still look your best.

Not everyone can afford to have a housewife these days. Sounds awesome
Through the Neuro Performance Strategist lens either you can ignore it or you can let it control you! yes control you if you're unable to comprehend it just give it a thought what made you think like that what made you make this post? Here's a quote from Markus Aurelius "You have power over your mind not outside events" 👍🏾

at this point, I'd just assume it's going to happen and get "ready" every morning.
As a woman, I believe using nonsense like "societal expectations" is meant a way to weasel out of full participation. No one enjoys Teams, Zoom, Meet, etc. To put a fine point on it, no one is paying that much attention to you, and if they are it's their problem. Grow up and act like a professional.
This is narrow minded. Facial expressions and body language form an huge part of how people are perceived. This especially true for business develooment personnel or anyone that values building relationships.
The anger goes to the next level, when it’s 1:1
On the contract that I am on, almost no one is on camera. usually the main boss is, and a couple of the higher-ups may sometimes, but it's not expected, and no one cares.
And that's a good sign of leadership and how they got there. By example. If I was them, all the others would be failing the test.
Yes no being a degenerate is kind of important in the workplace.
“Irrational anger.”
Your words, not ours.
Switch jobs. Your in PROFESSIONAL SERVICES for gods sake. Would your want your doctor to walk into the room wearing a full face covering?
*you’re
As a female I don’t mind using my camera when I’m working from home. Recently my boss required on having my camera on for a 1:1 but I was schedule to be in the car driving to a client. He insisted I get to the clients office an hour early so I could sit in my running car, parked to have my camera on. I did it but it was irritating for sure. The client meeting was booked weeks before the last minute 1:1.
Societal expectations come from within vs without. I'm on a zoom every Friday and I used to think I had to have my hair and makeup on but at my age now, I realize that was in my head....
This is very much a you problem. This irrational anger stems internally. Trust me this “bald man” you speak of isn’t happy he is bald. Get over work and smile.
It depends on the meeting. But if it’s a smaller meeting I like cameras on so we’re all giving this meeting our attention. Cameras off and I find myself multitasking, which is my own problem. I don’t care of you wear a headscarf so that any hair drama is contained. As engineers pony tails are my go to. All I ask from my team is to wear work appropriate attire where the camera sees (just no graphic tees, baseball caps). It’s just a part of business and I’d rather get “presentable ” than also drive to office.
I am privileged with straight hair, minimal makeup.
We’ve got it pretty good with remote work. Instead of waking up early to get fully ready, then sitting through a 30 to 60 minute commute just to be presentable in an office, you can start your day with far more flexibility. Camera on or off is a small tradeoff compared to 20 years of commuting, arriving early for meetings that get canceled at the last minute, or rushing through lunch just to make it back for a 1pm meeting that ends up postponed anyway. I’ll take the option to ease into the day and get presentable later over that routine any time. From home I have a private bathroom, best snacks, easier and healthier food options, the best desk setup I have ever had (bought my own) money saved on gas and wear and tear easily pays for that. Just the commute time saved alone has given me an easily 1-2 hours more sleep in the day. Not to mention I can toss a load of laundry in during the week. Giving me back more time on weekends. Can you use an avatar? They give a bit more interaction without the full camera on mode. Someday filters will just put you in a better VR professional version of yourself.
I always think when you're in a meeting with a camera off only half of the person is there, or worse that the person looks so awful, that only their voice turned up, or that they are secretly engaged in another job, or anything else the imagination can conjure up.
I concur.
I feel the same frustration about people who have theirs off all the time. I know you’re probably watching TV at the same time …
The "bald dude" thing reminded me of this South Park episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZBm5pAB-WHc&t=71s
(1:11-1:24)
If working from home, it would be good if people will prepare themselves as if actually going to the office. It won't be an issue then if the camera would be on or not. Rather than expectations, I encourage respect for the people one will have meetings or whether files will be shared or not which will affect camera quality.
