Absolutely not a fun position to be in. I do think that reframing it can be helpful for you and them too. PIP can be an opportunity, I know not every company or person looks at it like that though. Really is better to address whatever issues now and give that person the option to flourish.
If they don’t deserve to be on a pip, can you give some pushback to that decision?
That’s one of the hardest things to do as a manager!
It's a difficult situation, but one of those things where you just have to face reality. If they're really not a good fit for the role, you have to think about whether that can change. If it's possible they can adapt and do well, it could be a rare case where the plan actually helps. Or if the person is just not suited for the work, it's for the best in the long term to admit that and they can find something else.
Been there. It’s not fun especially if they’re genuinely great people.
Reframe thinking where you’re realigning responsibilities, priorities and expectations as it relates to the role, department and company. At the end of that conversation you’ll know for sure whether to keep or get a jump on finding a replacement.
That is one of the crappy parts of the job sometimes OP. Unfortunately you have to look at it from the standpoint of what is best for the company. People can be really nice people but not a good fit for the role. At the end of the ay its bretter they find out sooner rather than later.
