Never ever say you were put on a PIP. The only way they can find out is if they have an insider at your company or HR divulged enough “would you hire again?” on a reference call.
The recommended answer is “I left because I was not challenged in X, Y. I like this job opportunity because it will allow me to deliver impact on X, Y and Z. My experience in…”

Appreciate your honesty. A lot of talented people have gone through PIPs recently that were more about optics than performance. You don’t owe full transparency in every application—context matters. Saying you left due to a misalignment or org shift is fair. Save the full story for a place that genuinely asks and listens.
Honesty is usually best, framed thoughtfully. You can explain it as a learning experience or a mismatch in expectations, which shows self-awareness without oversharing. Most recruiters value context over justifying a departure.
