I had a conversation where I was explaining the 3.3% uplift, and I could see the disappointment before I finished speaking. You can explain tax, bands, backpay… but you cannot explain away how someone feels. HR does not decide it, but we sit with the reaction. How do you handle those moments without sounding like you are defending it?

I always tried to be as human as possible, especially when I could, it was humanizing to say “I know it’s not what some folks expected, but trust me when I say that I feel and understand the emotions. Most team members are in exactly the same position”.

You’re never going to make everyone happy and I live with that. A lot of people know that I don’t make the call, I just deliver the news. And if they don’t - we have a hard conversation - but that’s HR.

As someone who also is probably only getting a 3.3% increase too, it’s all in the delivery. Either the tone, intonation or a slow blink while delivering that sentence about understanding them. It says, “me too” without actually saying it.

Now, this can also be used to smooth over a conversation with an employee even if you get more than a 3.3% raise - but it at least shows you care, you hear them, you empathize with their experience, and honestly.. most other people are probably seeing that amount as a raise.

I have a hard time with this because I feel something is better than nothing.

Anyone joining Pune Location as DATA ANALYST in July or August ? let's connect

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Hi all!
Would love some insight on how you went from an HR assistant/coordinator to an HR Generalist. I’ve been in the HR world for 8 years, and only in the last 2-3 have I really done real HR work. The first company I was at didn’t have a solid HR team so I don’t really count that. I feel like I’m ready to take on more responsibility and learn more. And of course make more money.

I have looked into getting SHRM certification. But should I go back to school and get my masters in Hr?

We have sales people in Canada and the US, the Canadians make 150K CAD and down here it’s 150K USD, the Canadians argue they should be making 30% more than the US colleagues to be equal bc of the exchange! I explain the salary is dependent on the market data for them in Canada, WHERE THEY LIVE, and you can’t compare it to the US employees and the market data down here. Overall they are both in the 75th% for total comp. for their industry. Am I wrong?
