I had a lateral callback interview just over two weeks ago with a big law firm in a different city in a state I’m not yet barred in. I received a call from the recruiting manager a week ago saying that the “the partners want to know when you are moving to CITY.” I have not heard anything else following the call. Is it common for lateral hires to take a long time and have false starts like this? I feel like the chances drop after two weeks. Does anyone have thoughts on this?

I lateraled into a new city and had this question come up. I would always say “the second I have accepted an offer” and then people moved on from the question. Granted, this may not be true for you.

Yeah, I wish I was more direct with that because that is honestly the case. I think I got a bit flustered when I got the call because while I’d love to move there, I’m not doing so until I get a job in the area.

Unfortunately it is one of the states where I would need to retake the bar exam, so I can’t just waive in.

I said in the interviews and to the recruiter that I’m happy to start as soon as it would take me to pass conflicts, give notice, and move if the partners would be willing for me to start without my bar licensing, otherwise I am happy to delay until after I take the bar.

Yes, sometimes these linger, especially during the summer recruiting season (which is going on now).

Interesting- thanks for the thoughts. I’m going to try to follow up with the recruiting manager today. Probably won’t hear anything other than something generic but fingers crossed.

Do you have any plans to visit that city anytime soon (or would you schedule a trip on your own dime)? If so, you could write back and say that you'll be in CITY February 13-17 and are available for further meetings if there is interest. This might help push things along.

Honestly not a bad idea. Unfortunately I feel like my current firm will catch on if I keep missing days of work to go interview in another city (it’s a boutique so it’s all in person 5 days a week and I missed a number of days last month with interviews for this and another firm).

I might could consider it as I’m happy to fund another trip if necessary as I am very interested in moving to the area.

I’m so scared to let a relationship that gives me anxiety go because I’m 36 F and feel like I’m not going to find anyone else. He’s not a horrible person, but he can be inconsistent. I stick around because I think it’s more a personality trait and not that he’s not interested in me (maybe I’m naïve). Could really use some encouragement from a bunch of strangers.

I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? And FWIW I went to HYS and I’ve had a clerkship so it’s not like I’m not smart

Y’all. NO ONE KNOWS HOW MANY PEOPLE, AND WHO, WILL BE LAID OFF. The economy may bounce back next month or next year. It may get much worse or maybe we just sit stagnant before things improve. When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.
