Yep. The cyclical ten hour billable days followed by one hour ones are killer too. My significant other will often ask what’s wrong on the latter days and the answer inevitably is that I didn’t do enough that day. I know, I know, it all evens out in the wash but in the instant it’s hard to ignore the siren call of NEED MORE HOURS.
I went in-house for 2 years and for the first 6 months all I could think was "how is my usefulness to the company measured if there's no billable hour?"
This billable hour system really breaks you.
So true. I just moved in-house and I keep thinking about switching timers every time I work on a new thing. It’s like deeply embedded in my brain and work habits.
Every time I see one of those "~your worth is not measured by your productivity~" posts on IG I want to scream
The worst are the comparisons. A coworker is constantly billing 10 hr days while I average about 7.5, but I know it takes him two times longer than me to do the same tasks. I’m getting great reviews for my responsiveness and work quality, but he will probably be eligible for the higher bonus just because he works at a slower pace overall.
As someone who is probably the slow associate in this scenario…. I would love to do things faster! Please teach me your ways 😂 I don’t care about the bonus I just wanna work less. I get this totally from your perspective and it is why the billable model sucks. But trust me, I hate that everything takes me forever.
