I have 21 yrs in design, 15 yrs in web, 8 years in UX and 4 as manger. I usually have reported to a non-designer. I get no feedback/guidance, told conflicting things (Explore AI, we’re not doing AI; we’re a data first company, we are never doing that despite the data). I decided to DO LESS. My boss said I do a good job. I’m confused, burnt out. The job market is terrible. I’ve applied to a few jobs but being burnt out, I’m not sure what I want to do. In this market what’s people’s advice?

Same boat as you, honestly considering going back to freelance or starting a company with like minded people and break out of the corporate space. My direct report is a non-designer and although she can actually give constructive feedback, I constantly have to pushback because the things she suggests I do either break brand standards, typographical and/or design principles. Only a few times have I had to do things that I felt were wrong but it's a paycheck.

At the end of the day I don't like doing work I'm at heart not proud of and that's where you need to consider what it's all worth.

Just a quick question, how did you start your journey as a designer? I mostly learned design myself, won a few design contests on 99design & designcrowd, and some freelance work here and there. I am having difficulty finding even an internship where i can further polish my skills under seniors(for free literally) so i can add that to my work experience.

If you see an open job posting at a company you want to work for, what steps do you take to apply? I’ve been told that cold applying and making no contacts is usually not going to lead to anything, and that’s been true in my experience. But should I reach out to someone first? Should i apply and then email someone? In HR? Or someone who’d be directly supervising me? Or someone at my level? And what should i say? Thanks!

Hey fishies! I’m looking to take a leap into the remote world. I am a Sr. Graphic designer and art director in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦. I’m looking to take on more of an art director and creative director role, remotely. I can attach my website and a portfolio if anyone can help out. I have been designing professionally now for just over 15 years now. I work very quickly and very well with other team members. I also take on freelance work. I’m married with 2 kids so the more work the better.

Question! I just moved(transferred) to another team of my company and received new title, graphic & creative services. I was a senior graphic designer at the previous team. What do you think about my new title? I know that title is not a big thing but why I feel like my title is downgraded here… Good thing is my jobs here at my current team are what I really wanted to do. This is amazing. I love my new team and people here! Super healthy working environment! But just curious about the title.
