I have 21 yrs in design, 15 yrs in web, 8 years in UX and 4 as manger. I usually have reported to a non-designer. I get no feedback/guidance, told conflicting things (Explore AI, we’re not doing AI; we’re a data first company, we are never doing that despite the data). I decided to DO LESS. My boss said I do a good job. I’m confused, burnt out. The job market is terrible. I’ve applied to a few jobs but being burnt out, I’m not sure what I want to do. In this market what’s people’s advice?

Are cover letters important if they don’t ask for one? There are so many job postings and applicants I can’t tell if they would be beneficial to show effort or just a waste of time to write with how little time I assume people are looking at applications with the mass hiring going on. If I should be writing one, any advice how to format?

If you see an open job posting at a company you want to work for, what steps do you take to apply? I’ve been told that cold applying and making no contacts is usually not going to lead to anything, and that’s been true in my experience. But should I reach out to someone first? I have been designing professionally now for just over 15 years now. I work very quickly and very well with other team members. I also take on freelance work. I’m married with 2 kids so the more work the better.

How much time should I expect between starting a UX design boot camp, doing a job placement program with portfolio building to landing my first gig? I hope to be able to work quickly because I’ll have 15-20/week devoted to learning.
