I have a $1.2M net worth as a 3rd year NYC mid level (including home equity) yet I still feel broke and empty. Majority of paycheck simply goes into retirement accounts, mortgage or index funds. Not interested in dating/relationships and most days I just eat a six piece chicken McNuggets on the way home from work for dinner and rice and beans at home on weekends. My firm typically does insurance defense, but we take plaintiffs cases here and there. Is it typical that work done by associates on contingency cases isn’t counted toward their billable hour requirements unless and until we receive our fee on the case? This is my first experience with this, but it’s hard for me to reach my hours as is, without spending time on non billable cases like this with no assurance that I’ll see billable credit at the end.

If you start as a Program Manager, how/when do you begin to advise people as a people lead? I’ve heard Program Managers are not people leads. I started lead a team of 3 about a month ago at my current job and don’t want to lose leadership experience but have been told my YOE would map to a Program Manager level at Google.

Blast to the past - Anyone going to closing dinners and/or getting deal toys?

Joining a big firm next week as fully remote lateral and flying out to home office for orientation. The schedule has me in office until 4:15. I’ve already been told I won’t have any actual work. Depending on how many people are there and how it feels, I was planning to stay an hour extra but should I hang around the office until later? First time visiting this city so it’d be great to take in some sights too (although that’s not a priority of course).

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. I’ve made it 5+ years in a NY M&A practice and have consistent exceeding expectations reviews. I’ve had a few mental breakdowns because of work during this time, but thankfully made it through. How many interviews is too many? I’ve done 5 one on ones with different people in the practice group. They want me to talk to a few more, but I’m frustrated. It’s so hard to find time to schedule these things and the associates don’t seem to understand I can’t just take them in the middle of the work day at work. Recruiter thinks it’s a good sign.
