Tbh, the degree part is just a slight plus, at least in PI. It only gives you a slight leg up when it comes to applying for roles/moving internally - but from my experience, it doesn’t matter much at entry-level. They want you to be able to just have the skills and the ability to obtain licenses when needed. I have a hybrid degree in bio/psychology/behavior analysis, and my intention was to get my masters in forensic psych. With Covid running rampant in 2020, I just needed a job and put grad school on the back burner. I was able to break into finance pretty easily almost 3 years ago with no experience or degree in the field, and I’ve been here every since. Of course this is my experience; it may also depend on your employer as well if they are willing to give you a chance.
Thank you for this. How is it for you being able to move up? Harder without the degree or is it all just skill set based?
Look at the firms with heavy life science / healthcare focus.
Leerink, Canacord, Triple Tree.
They love people with that knowledge base.
Thank you!
Take the CFA, that will help, especially if you pivot into research (buy side or sell side) and even investment banking as MD1 suggested above.
Start with a small IB or hedge fund
Thank you. Any recommendations?
