I have a few people on my team that were on the verge of promotion. I'm working really hard to get them the promotion they rightfully deserve, but unfortunately budgets were tight this year and they weren't approved.

I can tell they're getting anxious, and I'm afraid I'm going to lose them. I really am fighting hard for their growth but feel like I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Any advice?

Unfortunately, whether you lose them or not is out of your control. All you can let them know is how hard you advocated and how much you notice their efforts. But money is money, and if your workplace won't recognize them the way you will, there's nothing you can really do about that.

I'm really hoping they realize how much I'm fighting for them. Totally get we all have bills to pay. It's just frustrating. But I also want to see them thrive even if it isn't here.

I think that being as transparent as possible can help you hold onto them for a bit longer. Sometimes it's the uncertainty that is most frustrating. But, I agree with PRS1 that you might just have to accept that some of this is outside of your control.

I'm sorry that has been your experience. I'm lucky that earlier in my career I had someone really stand up and vouch for me. I'm trying to pay it forward and do the same for my team.

Turns out one of my direct reports has been looking for a while and officially accepted a new role this week. They spoke with me and mentioned they knew I was really fighting for them. I could tell it was a hard decision but made me feel good they knew I was doing all I could to help them.

I know they'll be a great asset to their new team.

Does the addition of “(level) II” make a difference to anybody? I am the only marketing communications specialist for a lead child-welfare nonprofit. We oversee four counties in two circuits. Director recently gave me add’l merit-based raise (after my annual raise, been here 14 months) & slight title change to Marketing Comm Specialist II. No plans to add a level 1 (would be lower) specialist but will add level 1 engagement specialist to team. Should I update resume/cards or is this confusing?

Any recommendations to make sure I get a good year-end review (and raise)? Im a second year attorney at a good firm doing insurance defense. I have no billing requirement. My firm doesn’t really do bonuses, but they do annual raise. I get along well with the partners. I’m looking for ways to go the extra mile and make sure my review is good.

I am an account manager. More on the Operation side than sales. I have my annual review next week. Starting my 7th year at the current job. 13+ years in the field. But my current company is a nonprofit. They are great. But annual raise has always been 2%. So as a tenured SLP, I feel quite underpaid. But I honestly don’t know what is fair - especially for the region (Midwest) and in my speciality (pediatric outpatient rehab). Does anyone have any advise?

Need some feedback! So I was forced to move jobs about 6 months ago due to reorg and the new leader opting to bring their existing EA with them, without even meeting me. If stayed at the company but accepted an offer for a job outside of the department I was in. Any Bridge Engineers/Structural Engineers in here? I got my PE this year and have 5 YOE in TX + an MS. What sort of raise would you expect for receiving your PE working in a consulting firm? I am EOR on a number of structures in development, I manage EITs and Drafters (within projects; I'm not a supervisor), and am doing a lot in general. I'm at 78k currently, which is apparently still in the upper range of EIT salaries per a job posting in CO. I'm thinking of 15% (5% merit, 10% PE). Any ideas?

Advice: my firm incentivized associates to get licensed in fed courts - 4 fed courts for a 5k raise. They also covered the admission fee. I just accepted an offer with another firm and will be putting in my 2 weeks notice tomorrow. Is it wrong to submit an expense report for the charges I incurred related to the fed court admission fees? I didn’t plan on moving to another firm; the new firm sought me out and made me an offer - the process happened so fast. I want to be professional about this.
