My husband runs a startup - their advisory board is paid with shares for the most part.
For most of them it’s pretty minimal - a few hours a quarter. I’d suspect a few hours per month would be at the high end of expectations
Wtf is a purpose drive tech start up?
Tech start up with a social purpose: technology tools to end modern slavery, connect victims of domestic abuse to emergency accommodation, track deforestation etc
You’re an advisor; make recommendations on the strategic plan, get briefed on new ideas and critique them, provide a matchmaking service to technical information and experts.
You’ll typically be paid in stock. It’s a fun gig if you have the time and interest in the product.
Really varies - 4 to 16 hours a month (think closer to the four end). Depends what stage they’re at and what advice they want from you (if you have a professional set of skills be mindful this is one way start ups look to obtain these cheaper than they would if they had to engage a consultant).
Your comp should directly scale with the amount of time they expect you to commit. You are likely working with other busy professionals so the time commitment should be pretty concrete (again that depends on the start ups maturity).
Do be mindful at key stages of their growth and funding they will be much needier on you so factor that in (again within the frame of who they are and why they need your advice - if you’re a numbers guy this will be more critical than if you’re a tech guy).
