I have a theory that, all else equal, a hot girl from a lower T-14, and to a lesser extent a hot guy, with a median GPA has a better shot at biglaw than a slightly above median candidate from that same T-14 that’s average looking. Thoughts?

Look at sociology studies starting from the 1960s and 70s for many many studies on how being hot or tall has substantial career benefits. This isn’t new or a theory or related to big law or grades.

C1, I’ve been on this warpath since 1988, when my love interest was a star student at Michigan law and a summer clerk at a prominent firm in the upper Midwest. She called me one evening sobbing and hissing. She had just come from a firm reception with the firm’s senior and retired partners. She was casually chatting with a few old white guys in a small group. One of the men suddenly smacked her on her ass with an open hand, grinned at the others, and said “I’m so glad we started hiring girl attorneys.” She is a brilliant person who overcame a lot to get that job and that moment just shattered her. She ended up marrying a guy, having a flock of children, and abandoning her ambitions. There were other factors in her decisions but being so completely humiliated and disrespected was a major factor.

I have never been able to hear the g word since without thinking of her. For me, using it in any professional context is almost like using the n word.

A hot girl has a decent shot at biglaw even from a TT.

Yup. Realized that after posting. That’s when I learnt you can’t delete a fishbowl comment. Oh well.

Im surprised to read the comments. If anything, I feel like hot girls have a disadvantage in big law

funnylike

I’m serious. In other fields sure, but big law? No. I think big law lawyers would judge a girls hotness if anything and subconsciously perceive her as a potential airhead. Also most big law male attorneys are married with families and I believe being a hot girl would just make the senior male attorneys uncomfortable which could limit her. Not only that, but they may also feel uncomfortable because they don’t want to be questioned by others if he develops a relationship with the hot girl. Those are all my theories

Are you speculating that there’s an advantage to being a hot woman? That’s a truly crazy theory!
