I find that eating a hamburger during the interview — taking bites to emphasize your points — will draw attention away from the sniffles.
Get a decongestant, the good/meth kind from behind the counter. 12 hour, not 24. Take it a day or two before the interview so you’ll know how you feel on it in advance. But, honestly, ask to postpone (or to talk over the phone or Skype) if you’re noticeably ill. It’ll look weird if you go in for the interview while sick and potentially contagious (unless you have been told you aren’t contagious by a doctor?), and you being sick means you won’t interview as well and they won’t be able to evaluate you at your best.
Get some oil of oregano. 2 drops in your mouth, twice a day. Wash it down with lots of water Tastes horrible but I swear by it every time I’m feeling sick.
Let’s realistically assume that HR responds to emails 1x every 2 weeks and it was a struggle even getting a date on the books. Luckily it’s only sniffles for now but I don’t think I’m in “cancel” territory yet
If it’s just sniffles go with a DayQuil-level decongestant and maybe an ibuprofen to reduce inflammation in your nose to make it easier to breathe. If you do sniff weirdly, play it off with some kind of “fall allergies, I heard it’s ragweed that’s going right now — I promise I usually sniff only the normal amount for someone in this role.” Also you could put Vick’s or peppermint oil on your wrist or someplace discrete that you can smell to help clear things up as needed. And yes, have a tissue just in case. If you use it, don’t try to shake hands — you have to do that faux-casual “I won’t shake your hand, I have some fall allergies I should keep to myself, but it is/was so nice to meet you."
Postpone the interview. Being sick is a legitimate reason for doing so.
Lots of excuse mes.
Do I bring a kerchief? Hand sanitizer? How do I make the best of this?!?
🙈
Have a hot toddy (or 2) and take a boatload of zinc. That will usually kill it for me.
