I’ve been in an in-house role since the beginning of the year and just gave 2 weeks’ notice to leave for a much better paying and better titled position. The response has been very petty, to the point that I’ve been called unprofessional even after I asked the hiring attorney whether I could give longer notice at the current company’s request. Is this normal?

You’re leaving after two months? I mean, you do you, but not surprised by the pettiness. They invested time interviewing, hiring and onboarding you and now you’re going psych!

like

Every circumstance is unique but don’t expect the company that hired you to be sympathetic. Just take the pettiness and move on.

This is normal. You’re leaving after 2 months. I’m not sure why you would expect them to understand.

like

Agree this is normal. You do you but I'd be pissed too fwiw.

Just don't do it again soon. Having 2 quick exits on your resume will hurt you in the long haul.

like

This is something that I fear (accepting a job and then right away a better one comes along leaving you in an awkward position). You have to do what’s best for you.

like

Makes sense. But sometimes you apply for a job and don’t hear from them until months later.

I’m guessing petty on the part of the company you’re leaving (not the new place I hope!!)? Was the longer notice period ask granted by the new place?

Gotcha. Not sure if the response is normal but unfortunately I understand their reaction. They probably had to fight to get a new hire and now are angry that it’s over so quickly (especially because it means hiring all over again after, potentially, rejecting their other potential picks). But life happens! You have your own priorities and that I totally get.

like

Thanks all. It is what it is at this point, though now I’m beginning to doubt some advice I’ve received from recruiters and colleagues.

Sounds like you did receive bad advice. I’m not aware of any context where an employer would go through the trouble of hiring someone and not be irritated when they leave after a couple months.

That doesn’t mean you were wrong to leave (this is just a job) but I don’t blame them for being pissed or seeing it as unprofessional. The thing is that’s just a norm that benefits the employer so who cares.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

My background is in tech transactional. I joined a cybersecurity SaaS startup at the end of last year and now also handle more generalist matters in addition to all things commercial-related. I have a number of books on contracts that I’ve found super helpful over the years (The Tech Contracts Handbook, A Manual of Style for Contract Drafting, Sign Here, etc.). Can anyone recommend books they’ve found helpful for L&E matters, privacy matters, product matters, or marketing/advertising matters?

NFW- I just had a good laugh. Earlier today I was on a video conference call reviewing a Private Label Agreement template with a larger company who wishes to brand label products we develop and manufacture. We came to a very one-sided provision and my sales VP stated “for this one, how can we just say ‘hell no’ ...nicely?” The other person on the call said we can replace the wording with just NFW (no f@$* way) and I said “I will have to add that to the defined terms section so it’s clear”

I'm a first yr attorney at an insurance firm and am in the process of interviewing for an in-house position at a tech company. The position is pretty much generalist, but I get the impression I'd be working mostly on SaaS and partnership transactions. I definitely think I would like the transactional work better, but I am concerned about the long-term earning potential vs. partnership. How common is it to eventually make $400k+ in-house/how difficult is it to transition back to a firm? Thanks!
