I have an opportunity to move from US to Singapore for a boutique consulting practice lead role. CEO has said they have strong relationships that will assist with leads to build out sales opportunities in first 1-2 years. Anyone previously made a similar transition selling consulting work in Singapore and have any advice on the nuances of selling there vs the US? Also, I'd be bringing my family (elementary school age kids), any advice on adjusting to the culture, social network, etc?

Have you worked in Asia before? It’s a lot different from client relationships to staff and how they manage. It could be a cool life experience but make sure you are set up for success with bonus guarantees, etc. And then why not?? Just know it’s not going to be cakewalk but will be a transformative life experience. Also be sure you know what housing and car costs are in Singapore.

US expat in Singapore (5 years). You need to 2 things very well.

First, set appropriate expectations around performance targets. Singapore’s business environment has different frictions than you will have experienced in the US and it will take time to get up to speed.

Second, negotiate your expat package carefully. The influx of HK money is stressing the system in multiple ways (housing costs, availibility of private school places, COE cost).

Take care of these two and you’ll have a blast.

Which Industry or functional focus is this boutique?

Yes and relocation back to the US should it come to that. Also, board relationships and c suite relationships are super important there. There are a relatively few number of execs that sit on boards and they all seem to know each other. Once you get traction and credibility it will go fast for you. So focus on making sure you can leverage those relationships and are set up well for delivery (talent, budget, IP, etc).

It’s not going to be easy. Singapore is a completely different way of doing business compared to the US. I hope the team there is strong enough to support you.

Why aren’t they hiring locally or regionally? Feels very risky. At minimum I’d suggest working first year before bringing your family unless they are doing something special there.

Good point about not moving everyone until you have your own boots on the ground. You might love it, you might hate it and leave after six months.

Agree with comments above. Why can’t they hire from APAC / EMEA. Is there a practice in place?

How many clients do you already know in Singapore, Malaysia, and broader APJ?

Did it. It’s been a hell of a right. Get guarantees for the first two years and a solid expat relo package.

Typical expat packages include things like monthly allowances for your rent, allowances for school / childcare for you kids, etc. If your company isn’t paying for any of that, it might make the move as a partner much less attractive.

I am looking to make a career change to HR. I currently make 75K as a sales and development coach. I had a recent offer for a state government position in a talent acquisition role but I’d be taking a $25K pay cut. I am extremely over qualified for the position but it could possibly be a stepping stone and gives me the time to acquire SHRM certifications and possibly start taking classes to get my MBA. My question is those currently in an HR role, would this move make sense to you?
