I would imagine you'll need to have an explanation of why you haven't worked in eight years. People will naturally be curious about an eight-year illness, and may wonder if you are capable of working now. That's perhaps the biggest obstacle you'll have. But you'll also need to show some competence. Just be clear that you're re-entering the workforce and you do have experience and a record of work from before your career was interrupted.
Thank you so much, I appreciate it
I recommend contacting local staffing agencies. You may want to consider what accommodations you may require. If you're in the US, accommodations are covered under ADA. You may want to look for positions that are open to hire people with didisabilities.
Take a look at how you want to disclose. Or if you even want to disclose.
I would consider temp or temp to hire roles as well as full time permanent roles. Having more recent work experience in which you can demonstrate you are capable of working in a full time capacity would help. Ideally with a reference you can provide a prospective employer.
Consider what you want the narrative to be in your future employer’s mind of your past work experience and professional background and what you want in the next 5-10 years.
Do you want just a job, or a stepping stone in a career? Is whatever illness you had or have going to hinder you from working in a full time capacity? I’d consider utilizing a recruiter as well.
Remember too, hiring managers are not just evaluating whether you have the capacity to do the job, but also whether you would be a good fit in the culture of the organization and the team you would be placed in.
Try state agencies. They will train you.
OP this is such a hard job market to be looking for a role in and especially entry level roles. I have been applying for over 5 months and only had a handful of interviews. You might try posting in the job referral bowl though, I have had some luck getting referrals in there.
