I feel like they wouldn’t have offered the position without feeling like they could keep you billable for the year? Have that honest conversation about your concerns given the climate and see what kind of action plan they have in place and how confident you feel about it. If the new spot can give you some semblance of reassurance considering current conditions, then why not? And don't take this the wrong way, but you could be doing your current employer a favor by coming off their payroll voluntarily.
