I got a verbal offer from a WPP agency today. The role's budgeted salary is 5k less than my desired salary. The recruiter can get me closer but still not at my desired salary. Otherwise - it would have to go through a long approval process with no guarantee that the salary would even be OK'd. I'm coming from a small agency, so I could be wrong - but I don't want to sell myself short by accepting the first salary they offer. Do I have any room to negotiate? Or is that risky?

If you don’t start where you want to be, you’ll never catch up to it. Because you won’t get a raise at a WPP shop for years.

WPP will NEVER, ever, match your number. In negotiations, promotions, raises, etc. they are extremely cheap. I speak from experience but also think about it: they won’t pay you now, how is that any indication they would later?

like

Spoiler alert. They definitely won’t pay you later.

like

If they won’t meet your number, forget them.

like

Believe me when I say they’re probably bluffing. WPP makes it hard, especially if that 5k puts you over your salary band, but if they want you, they’ll do it. I’d keep pushing if the 5k means a lot to you.

like

I’m the long run, 5k is nothing. Think more about opportunities and connections.

like

In a coastal city that’s notoriously painfully expensive so 5k sadly makes a big diff at my level😢

If you are willing to walk away there is no risk. You simply state your number and say, “For me to be able to accept your offer, this is my minimum. It can be any combination of salary, bonus, allowances—whatever works. But that’s as low as I can go.”

like

Pass. At AE or SAE level $5k makes no difference to them and a lot to you. You’re definitely never getting a raise, and even with a promotion the salary increase will be offensively bad. Don’t start out disappointed, it will only get worse from there.

like

They can definitely match it but it really depends on the position you're applying for. If it's higher up the channel it's merely peanuts to them. They make a lot of money. If it the case I would push for it.

I have a question for HR/People Department leaders: For companies that are 1,000+ employees, what is your ideal HR/People Department structure? How many direct reports, and sub departments/teams does the CPO have, and what are roles are you hiring for (Traditional HR roles or more fluid/hybrid People Ops roles)?

I’m taking the GMAT in September and would like to include my score on my applications to other firms. Based on what I’m getting in practice, it would significantly improve my resume. However, I heard many firms, particularly MBB, have hiring windows in August, so applying later would hurt my chances. Is this true, and if so, when should I apply? Is it possible to apply earlier and then fill in the recruiter on my GMAT score while I’m in the process?

Is MBB (mostly thinking about McKinsey) really that bad in terms of WLB? I wasn't considering switching since I love my job and my team, but many people are telling me I shouldn't "waste" my potential at Deloitte (whatever that means...).
