I just got an internal promotion to a more senior role. It has come with a 3% pay rise, which honestly feels like an insult as it's lower than any in-role merit increase I've received over the last several years at this company. Am I being delusional? How do you recommend I address this, if at all?

Suggest a polite discussion with your leader to understand how they landed on that number before getting too emotional.

I would keep the job and keep looking.

Take the promotion and use the new job title to look for another job elsewhere. This sort of low-ball salary increases companies give to existing employees is nuts. It's like they want us t o quit. If they hired someone from outside for the same role it is certain they'd be making significantly more.

I would just look for a new job and leave. Companies do this all the time to internals candidates, lowball them.

like

You didn't negotiate? Never say no but I would say " I appreciate you confidence in me but please tell me why the organization feels that this promotion only dictates a 3% increase above my current salary of x. Then shutup. No matter what was said after I would tell them I would need 1 week to consider the offer. I would ask them to layout the position details and expectations plus bonus incentives that is static and performance based.

helpful

Always ask a question that requires a full and deep explanation when it comes to salary ranges And caps. After you ask the question always shut up. Listen intentively do not break eye contact. Do not shake your head yes or no. Do not show emotion. After they answer you which probably will be a b******* answer do not say anything for at least five to 7 seconds. At that time thank them for their explanation and tell them you will need a week to consider the offer. If they tell you that there is a time limit that they don't have a week, tell them you understand. Yet you need a week. Don't refuse the offer but be firm on your time frame. If they tell you that the offer is good at that time, only ask them if you do not accept at this point. Are they pulling the offer? If they say yes, tell them you regret their decision in this. But you do not make decisions this profound in such a haste way.

Don’t take the promotion

It isn't offered to accept or not, it's just assigned... before I've even had an email or letter or whatever about it, the HR system has updated with the new figure and my new role title.

don’t take it. also look up what the market rate is for that role so you have an idea of what to counter with.

SC, in the case of that company, the decision to underpay everyone bit them in the ass. They realized they were losing their high performers, so they had a layoff and then gave raises and promotions to those they wanted to keep the most. But, rather than encourage retention, there was a huge spike in attrition after the layoff. The layoff made a toxic environment feel even more toxic, and those high performers used the salary and title bumps to find jobs elsewhere.

Do your market research and negotiate what you think is a fair salary

I would call them and ask if we could meet and
I would address the pay and your experience if they won’t budge I would accept the position but actively looking.

Hi all,

Do firms match offers from other Big 4s for campus hires? I’ve received a campus offer from both
KPMG and EY. I’m more interested in the EY offer, but they are paying 3k less than KPMG.

Would it be a bad move to let them know about the other offer and try negotiating? I feel it wont make a difference in the long run, but at the same time I don’t want to leave any money on the table if possible.

Thanks!

My boss (atty) is so disorganized! I’ve been with him 6 months and he’s having a hard time delegating, sharing info and managing deadlines. I’ve organized the caseload to manage the deadlines. He says he wants me to help with discovery but when I offer to start on one, he says he needs to do it. (Since he might have to present as evidence) When I give him deadlines and ask for the docs he says he’ll get to it. It’s a small 1 man firm, and I’m the first assistant besides his wife. Any advice?

If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?
