I just joined a new company that's got a much more casual tone than the last place and I was told today that I come off a little stiff. Surely it's ok to be too formal than not formal enough?? I'm not unfriendly.

I wouldn't take the cultural differences lightly. Casual employees might take offense and decide that you're anti-social. That can hurt your chances of getting promotions and bonuses in the future.

Not a very helpful comment, IMO. Of course you aren’t yet going to be relaxed and entirely yourself when you just started and don’t know everyone yet. Give yourself some time, and consider it clear that they want to get to know you.

Breathe and relax. Its great feedback it means they want to work and inviting you into the fold. I think the feed back is about building rapport and trust. It sounds like in this new culture being formal is opposite of collaboration.

I think it's great that you got that feedback. They're inviting you in. Waiting for your leadership and collaboration skills to shine through in your new relaxed work culture. It's a good sign. Good luck to you! 🍀

Go out for drinks with your co-workers after hours!

I have been told this at jobs I have had as well and honestly, I just ignore it. Sue me for being professional in my professional place of work. Everyone else seems to be clowning and goofing all the time and that is just not me.

What is your understanding of the norms around whose names end up on a brief/complaint/motion papers etc.? I’m a midlevel at an AmLaw 20 firm and have twice been the principal drafter of something only to be cut from the signature block. The associate senior to me is on it despite having done far less of the work. And it’s not because it required a rewrite or something. The filed product is 80-90% my work. Am I wrong to be pissed off about this?

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.

Struggling to get work at a free market firm after lateraling. I was very well liked at my prior firm and had high hours so really struggling to understand why folks don’t seem to want to come back to me with more work. For those at free market firms, how frequently do you have to ask for work? How do you typically ask? Just send partners emails asking if they have any deals for you? Thanks y’all.

Hi HR Professionals! I am revising our current employment application form. Per SHRM, I was just curious if any HR Professionals completely removed the following fields: social security number, recommend salary, graduation dates, military discharge info, race, maiden name like (Ms. Mrs. Ms), & criminal history questions. I was just curious what other Employers/HR Professional have done. Any information is greatly appreciated. Thank you!
