I wouldn't take the cultural differences lightly. Casual employees might take offense and decide that you're anti-social. That can hurt your chances of getting promotions and bonuses in the future.
Not a very helpful comment, IMO. Of course you aren’t yet going to be relaxed and entirely yourself when you just started and don’t know everyone yet. Give yourself some time, and consider it clear that they want to get to know you.
Breathe and relax. Its great feedback it means they want to work and inviting you into the fold. I think the feed back is about building rapport and trust. It sounds like in this new culture being formal is opposite of collaboration.

I have been told this at jobs I have had as well and honestly, I just ignore it. Sue me for being professional in my professional place of work. Everyone else seems to be clowning and goofing all the time and that is just not me.
