Always look but don’t tell anyone you need to keep an eye out for what’s the going market rate for your experience. The company i work for is not doing well financially so raises were cut this year though I received a bump due to my salary falling under market rate (7.5%)
Did you have to prompt for the salary or was that initiated from their end?
Usually places will give you the bump or have it worked into payroll as an annual cost of living raise for everyone. It’s ok to ask if they do that. Either way it’s never enough to cover raises in cost of living and shouldn’t be considered a “raise” in my opinion. If they don’t do this it’s a sign of either size or current financial situation. Other questions to ponder: does my evaluation actually matter ? I.e. is there advancement opportunities or is this just a chat about what they want from me? Does this company plan for my future? I.e do they see me climbing some ladder or completing a range of products/processes or am I just engineer 1, 2, or 3?
Small firms with no process will just do the bare minimum either out of cost savings or out of laziness. Best to bring it up yourself with the firm first but always good to look around as well.
Most engineers I know start looking after two years at a company. Usually between three and give years they become more valuable to other companies.
