I know everyone says never to use your current comp as part of negotiation but is it ok to do so in this current situation? A boutique firm has reached out because they are interested in my background. I’m at 120k as a consultant now and will potentially be at ~150k as a manager in December. The boutique firm would like to interview me for a consultant level position and on Glassdoor the average salary is 80k. How do I approach? I don’t think it makes sense to leave for less than $160k.

I think yes. If you know your current comp is significantly higher than what they will offer it serves as a very effective anchor. My question is what is attractive about this other firm given the huge pay gap?

like

I’d be careful jumping to the first thing that comes along.. WLB is great, but if you aren’t challenged you’ll be running for the exits soon...

I’d also look hard at the career progression opportunities at the boutique... as it sounds like comp is important to you

like

I would be open and say just that to the recruiter.

I would.

You approach by asking what’s their range for
Comp on this role when asked

like

Mention that. “Hmm I was actually thinking something higher, because with my promotion at EOY I will be at manager level and making between xx and yy. I also feel like that’s pretty in line with my skills like x y and z that I bring to the table. Is there any wiggle room there, and potentially the chance to come in as manager?”

like

Have you even interviewed or had a prescreening call yet? I’d first have an introductory call if you’re interested and better understand the role and what they’re asking for. The recruiter may have no clue about what your responsibilities are and what you do day to day since they’re a smaller firm.

Most smaller companies have set budgets and set responsibilities in mind when they recruit. They can and do “create” positions, but you would need to be a rockstar or fill additional gaps based on the interview to do that.

It’s totally fair to ask about comp up front and you can ask about wiggle room, but I’d hold off on negotiating title.

like

You should use anything you can use to increase your leverage and offer. Anything that puts you at a disadvantage that you can argue away, do that. You don’t need to be consistent.

In this case your current pay is absolutely relevant because it will impact your ability to take the job. Just tell the recruiter and even add onto it.

I like to give a range, and put the lowest number in that range to pay that I’d be more than happy with. The hiring company will always jump to the lowest number thinking they’re getting a deal.

I’d wait until you’re seen as a good fit. When interviewing, I found a role I wanted and then when I found out the pay was much less, I’d already hooked them into thinking I was the best fit. So I told them my requirements for salary, saying I knew what I brought to the role was worth they increase. They had to get approvals, and then my current comp went up, so they had to go back to boost what it would take to “get me to switch”. It was never about matching salary but about the value I brought and the amount they wanted to pay to get me there.

5 YOE+Degree at a top engineering school in Europe
My experience at Google made her interested in joining the company, but we never really acted on it.
Could she be a good fit?
If so which areas/orgs?
