I ask what the salary range is for the position they’re interviewing me for. You never want to be the first one to throw out a number.
My point is it’s a different tactic than what I was suggesting. Glad you agree and posted this elsewhere in the larger post.
“Competitive with the market” you pigeonhole yourself when you give any number regardless high or low
Do not give a # whatever you do. I would have low balled myself out of more than 20k had I been the first to throw a number out.
Strategy is secret though or else everyone is going to know it! DM me if you want a hint
I anchor the number to the highest possible reasonable number. Got a 50% raise in my base and negotiated higher than the recruiter range.
I disagree that you should never give out the number first. Do research and go as high as possible.
I gave a low number, then after interview I increased it and got it.
I think you can fairly accurately extrapolate what you should earning based on: education, YOE, specialty, where you are looking to move (company, group and role). For example, I know that if I go to a gov consulting firm its going to be lower then commercial....unless I have some sort of high level clearance and exp in the intel space. Also if you’re going to say PWC you will generally make probably less then going to Strategy&, even though it’s part of PWC. Once you have that general number just say the ceiling and work with that.
