I need some advise. I am a relatively new adjuster. I have 7 years of experience in the insurance industry, a bachelors degree in Business and an AINS from the institutes. I currently work as a GL adjuster with a TPA. I have seen a high turnover rate on my team in my short time at this position. I received maybe 2 hours of formal training and the rest has been learn by fire, even with claims in litigation. It’s a nightmare. I can’t get 5 minutes of my managers time a day. Would you leave?

Yeah. Leave if you can. It's probably only going to get more problematic as you get further in.

I've found that TPAs usually do not offer much room for growth/development. Personally when I was an adjuster, I had 1:1 sessions weekly and multiple meetings spread out through the week for when I did have questions or needed help. If you're not feeling supported, then you should look for another company who may value you more.

like

Yeah I’m slowly learning that to be true. I’ve been given complex claims with a high case load and no training. I’ve done well and am learning fast but there are issues with the team manager being overworked. I definitely don’t see myself staying here. But with only a few months of adjusting experience it may be difficult to find a company that values me more. I appreciate your response.

like

That sounds like chaos. I'd have left a long time ago.

I’m in a very similar scenario and have been with the company just over 9 months now. It still feels very unorganized and sporadic. I’m still struggling to find a groove and get concise direction on complex claims. When I have addressed feeling overworked and under compensated they reply with “well you’re still in training, it will take you a couple of years to really feel comfortable!” That being said, I joined this app to get insight from others in the industry and from what I’ve read thus far, I may be making a switch sooner than later! Best of luck to you!

breadth oriented masters in CS (finishing in spring)

Targeting PM roles cause people work comes easy to me (vs applied science/MLE coding) and ops cost center budgets suck. Doing formal CS just cause wanted to learn, fill in gaps.

At what point does the value of a degree fall off? I'm in my early 30s, and have five years of experience, and work on a very theoretically interesting project. I believe I'm on track to promotion in the next year. So, I could put in a year of full time school to check the box off, but I'd be sacrificing hobbies and social life (not to mention cost). Is this FOMO or is there real opportunity here?

Or how much should I be making? Appreciate your help

I feel like every company lies about “working your way up.” You’re never allowed to blatantly say that you don’t like your position and you’d like to transition to HR or Finance. It’s almost as if once you get in claims, you’re stuck.

If you’re a manager and you see an employee that wants to branch out into a different department, why would you keep them boxed in for 2+ years?

Are there some background mechanics that I’m missing?
