I once turned down a role with strong compensation because the company mission didn’t resonate with me, and I still think about that decision. Motivation mattered back then but in today’s market… I kind of regret my choice. How much weight do you give mission alignment?

My personal criteria used to be a business that has a net neutral or close to it impact on society.

The longer I spend in corporate America, the more I realize almost all of them have a net negative impact on society, though some are clearly worse than others.

Yup time to stop thinking like an idealist and start thinking like a contractor who gets paid.

Mission statements are corporate babble. A job is where you trade your time for money, period. You're nothing more than an expendable resource to them so why would you give a F about their phony mission statement? As long as they're not doing anything unethical and the work seems interesting, take the job.

I refuse to work with defense companies or companies headquartered in countries that are unabashedly perpetuating violations of basic human rights (whatever you interpret that to be — I’m not going to entertain you) But otherwise, *most* things are fair game.

User support would’ve done well in Germany circa 1939

There are many companies that I would never work for due to their business practices, company mission, etc…

I won’t work for a company that I don’t think is trying to make things better in this world. I’ve had recruiters reach out for a few of those companies when I was looking and they were very understanding and respectful of that decision.

like

I’m ok with the company being for-profit and solving problems.

I’m not ok when those problems are things like political conflict, and the for-profit solution is weapons or other things that enable war. Or companies who generally manipulate people’s attention via knowingly addictive mechanisms, or use their products as a Trojan horse for surveillance against their consumers.

Some people are ok with working for those companies, and I get it. I’d prefer to work for companies who have “more traditional” products / services, even if that means they’re slightly less profitable and I make less money.

I currently work in a place that is very mission-driven. Many join us specifically for the mission. We have programs all over the globe and receive so much lovely feedback from our subscribers. Many of us are now very, very miserable.

Mission only gets you so far if management is bad and unwilling to support their employees. Comp only gets you so far if you're pushed to work extra every week for no recognition or appreciation.

Even some sympathatic executive leadership has taken to reminding downtrodden employees that it's "just a job."

Really unfortunate but even the sweetest mission can be spoiled by a bad atmosphere.

The reason for a job is money, unless their mission statement was “we slaughter puppies” then you probably didn’t make the best choice.

There are lots of companies who do illegitimate things to dogs. And yes, those companies are on my “won’t work for” list.

In my opinion, the BPO Industry to regain Ethical Principles and harmonious working environment without worries or fear that anyone felt humiliated or abused to address #unethical #behavior ...#unethicalbehavior or #malpractices.

That these principles are taking advantage the opportunities of a few in which other's opted to leave the kind of work that they'll have because it's Against the Norm of one's principles. We should respect everyone's right and privacy. Anyway that's a two way process wherein an employee / employer relationship contributing for the welfare of the Company. If there's a Corporate Social Responsibility, meaning we take good care other's without depriving their role's and beliefs. Ethically.

Thus, we should be keen enough not to tolerate any fraudulent charges or activities. These #malware issues in which being debunked i.e. McDonald's outage's, that these tool's are already obsolete. The industry is coping up the vastness and evolution of every now then a new approach of applications or workflow's to tackle customer's concerns effectively.

You should be confident that you made the best choice. You want to work where you know that your efforts support your values. Otherwise, you would be here regretting that your work is meaningless or worse contributes to the world you want to change.

Good decision, never regret it.
If a mission doesn't resonate with your code of ethics then forget about such company and move on

If it's a for profit company, the mission is always to make more money at a growth rate investors like. Government is full of cynical people only out for their own advancement rather than some public service. Nonprofits are probably the best place to consider mission alignment. Otherwise, my criteria is about how the company is making money. I won't work for a defense contractor no matter much money they offer me. Same for oil and gas, mining, factory farming, or companies that exploit workers around the globe or try to bust union efforts. That narrows it down a lot for me, but I don't regret being that way.

Zero weight. Most corporate execs can't recite their mission for $1k. My mission is to my family and myself.

In the market of today I don’t think mission and motivation really matters anymore. Most of us just want to get something doing that will pay the bills.

If a company was going to pay me €500,000 a year to burn down hospitals I'd do it 😂. Regret nothing and fear less.

Moral compass ?? Maybe not !

Now that I’m older - I have the privilege to choose where I invest my talents and time. When I was younger I was very focused on simply building monetary wealth so didn’t care much whether things resonated or not. Right now, I’m on my way out with LinkedIn whether I get that sweet severance or not. They do have an admirable mission, just a 💩 culture. I do not align with how people - really leadership - work here. It’s toxic and just a tragedy what it has become. No regrets. You just keep moving forward and know you are exactly where you’re meant to be in life. The right opportunity, people, lessons show up…and you keep going.
