From personal experience, managers like that don’t really care about an explanation for why you can’t turn something; they only want to know when it can be done. They can moan and cry and complain all they want, but at the end of the day, there’s nothing they can do if you can’t comprehensively complete a task within their scope of expectations.
There’s a time and place to talk about teamwork, success metrics, and communication. You can schedule time to talk to leadership at any point, but your first priority should always be to communicate to the best of your ability what you can and can’t do, and when you can and can’t meet a deadline.
I hope this is helpful. I’d also love to hear anyone else’s thoughts.
Thanks! I tried to reach out for one-on-one’s but it got rescheduled twice and eventually cancelled. I also asked for more team meetings (now we have none) so at least I know what other people are doing, but the same thing happened. I am a bit worried that since my speed is impacted by my mental state and is getting slower, if they would consider me less and less capable :( When I’m not struggling I actually consider myself really efficient.
Have you outright asked for more help and support? If you're producing under the current demands, there's a chance your boss simply doesn't realize you're overwhelmed. That's where I'd start.
I actually did! But everyone is overwhelmed 24/7, and if I don’t finish certain things, my manager (also a designer) will have to finish it up themself till 4am, which makes me feel bad.
