I recently completed my MSc in Biotechnology and have been applying for laboratory and research technician roles. I would really appreciate insights from professionals here on what companies typically look for when shortlisting entry-level candidates, and what common factors might lead to applications not being selected. Any guidance on how I could improve my applications would be greatly appreciated.

Many companies typically look at your job history for years of experience and if you’ve done any research or laboratory related work before.

Thank you for your insight! I do have hands-on laboratory experience through my internship and academic research, but I understand that industry experience is highly valued. Would you recommend focusing more on gaining specific technical skills or applying broadly to entry-level roles to build experience?

When I’m hiring it’s mostly about communication skills because I ca train someone on tasks it’s hard to train someone to speak well to clients or work on a team well

Thank you, that’s really valuable insight. I’m currently working on improving both my technical and communication skills alongside applying for roles. From your experience, what do you think makes a candidate stand out during the hiring process for entry-level roles?

I feel like I'm doing everything right, but my research is not getting the attention it deserves.
