I have an LMSW and have been an adjunct in SW and Psych departments for years. I got on quickly because I volunteered to teach as many Psych Stats / Research Methods courses as they would give me. IME, tenured professors don’t like teaching those classes. Turns out I really like teaching them so I always have a steady gig for those courses. I get other courses as well.
Honestly, just reach out to Dept heads in various SW Depts. Start with smaller universities. Offer your services to take on any course that needs filled.
Congrats on the recent graduation, I just got my MSW too! From my understanding from a former professor I had, as long as the experience you gain from your job is one that gives you clinical, administrative, or advocacy experience that is closely related to Social Work, you should be able to secure a position as a professor.
Thanks! I appreciate the info!
Congratulations! I think working in the administrative department at your local social working office would be a good fit for you.
General experience in the field, substitute teach at lower level grades, run groups and develop the group outline topic/discussion
I spent 4 yrs working at a middle school while getting my MSW. I became a certified trainer at my first post grad job, ran all sorts of clinical groups, supervised other students after graduation, etc. Did adjunct teaching/field liaison in the bsw program for a few years part time, and loved it!!
From my experience as a adjunct in a bsw program.. having a clinical license is on par with a doctorate (bc you can be over field and etc if you did it full time)Obviously not the same, but when they hire..they prefer a lcsw and or ppl just practicing in the field to give students that real world view. If you had a good relationship with your program, just ask them if they need any help.
With you being fresh out of school and licensed , I wonder why you want to go straight into teaching. To me, that seems to be a bit counter as to why people want to get into SW in the first place
