1. Pick an airline and hotel chain and stay in that ecosystem. I am AA and Marriott.
2. Have a schedule and a set way of doing things, and stick to it. For me I always workout at night and will not let my schedule impact that, simply put. I also always pack the same way, I know exactly where things go and that helps me ensure I don’t forget anything.
3. Take direct flights at all costs. I can’t tell you the number of people I meet who take indirect routings home and get inevitably stuck in a city or make their SO’s hate them for not being home. Just. Take. The. Direct. Flight.
I’ve set a sort of rule for myself that I should go to 1 team/client dinner a week, but nothing more than that is required. You’ve likely got some work to take care of for the next day, which is perfectly acceptable as to why you pass on (subsequent) dinners.
I bought two of all my toiletries and just keep a set packed in my suitcase at all times: toothbrush, toothpaste, contacts case, glasses (cheap pair from eyebuydirect), razor, deodorant, etc. so the only thing I need to add to it when packing are my prescriptions.
same goes for travel cords, charger and a power strip in hotels is priceless. I keep those duplicates in my bag so I don't have to unpack and pack them. Worth every penny to have two of everything, If your drycleaners does this pay extra to have shirt pressed and folded so you don't have to do the folding o pack day.
All great advice. Also, stay 1/2 packed with a second set of easy to forget things remaining in the suitcase, like toiletries, a reversible belt, tie (in a damage-proof tie case), wrinkle-phobic blue blazer; 100 business cards in a rubber band for networking; extra set of plugs and cords; travel-sized powerstrip; inflatable horseshoe airplane pillow and eyemask; full set of meds including bandaids, pain meds, nail clipper, dramamine, Imodium, etc.; back-up laptop plug, socks/underwear/undershirt; find good quality wrinkle-free shirts and pants. MOST IMPORTANTLY, speaking as someone who's traveled to 48 states and 50 countries for work -- TAKE TIME TO TOUR. You'll go to some great cities and awful little places. Don't experience it all through the window of a hotel or Uber. Spend an hour or half day visiting the fabulous local museum or tourist attraction. Don't look back in 20 years and realize you've been to 25 cities and never saw or did anything. Travel can be difficult and stressful. If you're going to Philly, spend an hour and see the Liberty Bell. After work in a small town, go catch a game at the local AA baseball team. Trust me, after 30 years of regular travel, I've been everywhere and seen everything. But I didn't do any of that for the first 5 years of travel then realized I was wasting an enormous opportunity. Good luck!
I really appreciate your comment. Whenever I stay a weekend in my work location, I always go to the nearest big city. I’ll try to be more intentional with my time!! Thanks!! :)
Get CLEAR too - even with pre-check
Certain credit cards (AmEx Platinum, for example) offer Clear reimbursement as a benefit.
Also, even if you never fly Delta, sign up for SkyMiles. Even the base members get a Clear discount.
If you are traveling, that doesn’t mean it’s a vacation day and you don’t have to answer email. Amazing how many people blow an entire day for a one hour flight.
Never check luggage. A roll-aboard and a personal item is enough for 2 weeks if you’re intentional about packing. Also, most companies let you expense hotel laundry if you’re on the road for more than a set number of days. (It goes without saying, learn your expense policies well.)
Also, make sure you pack any critical meds, toothbrush, etc in your “personal item” as you never know when your A321 will go mechanical and they’ll put you on a CRJ200… where the luggage “valet” then forgets to load your roll aboard. Yes, this has happened to me.
I have a small pouch with a change of underwear and socks, a blister of NyQuil, a single-use toothbrush, an eye mask and earplugs that always goes on my briefcase specifically because of the above situation.
Try to keep your body on your home time zone even if that means getting up super early etc. Eat healthy and hit the gym. If you don't have to meet a client right off the plane wear simple and comfy clothes which helps with airport security.
Definitely stay hydrated!

There’s always another flight. If you’re late, delayed, etc., there’s no point to getting upset. It will happen again and you will eventually make it where you need to go.
1. Always send a calendar invite for your meetings and specify time zones. And include the calendar reminder 30 minutes out.
2. Always pack extra underwear, socks, and a swimsuit.
3. Book your own travel if you can.
4. Make time to call any family you have at home.
5. Eat local, drink local. If you’re ordering a Bud Heavy at the Applebee’s bar, it better be your last resort for dining choices.
6. See some sights!
7. Be polite to gate agents, flight attendants, and office admins.
You wear your swimsuit in the bathtub too?
Don’t limit yourself to just one airline, just one rental car company. The loyalty programs are free to sign up for, so get whichever ones make sense (and then inquire about accelerated status incentives - most airlines, before the pandemic at least, would hold periodic opportunities for you to level up fast. I’m totally drawing a blank on the official name for them tho).
Yes that’s right. Tier challenges, fast track programs, etc. The short time periods where if you sign up ahead of time every flight will earn you status faster
Check travel program promotions often. They won’t necessarily tell you when there are new offers.
