I don't want to say it's normal. But it has become more normal for organizations to operate that way. You hear so many stories about people just being ghosted that it really does seem to be endemic. It's possible they're just taking their time, but they should communicate better, that's just undeniable.
Thanks I've been applying to other jobs. Just wasn't sure if a city job takes longer. It took a month for them to schedule the interviews. They seem to run a little slower than other jobs I've applied for.
Personally, I'd move on to other opportunities. If you're really interested call the manager directly - forget HR - they are just an obstacle to get anything done.
I've worked for city government for many years and yes, it's totally normal not to hear back. Doesn't necessarily mean that you didn't get the job, just a lot of hoops to jump through before a job offer can be made. But, never hurts to reach out to the hiring manager, not HR.
Personally, I assume everything's a 'no' until there's an offer. It's so much better than stalling your search b/c you've pinned hope. Move on until you find an offer. I've been in your situation and received a 'yes' after a four-week delay. It then took another month to finally onboard me. The majority of HR departments I have experienced are godawful at their jobs.
Yes, the cityi s extremely slow in everything. This is very normal. Keep phoning.
I've had similar situations like this - totally ghosted after an interview. After a few phone calls & emails I gave up.
I have worked in local government for 15 years. I can tell you that it always takes longer than you would think to get a final answer. Of course, continue to apply for other things, but what’s for you won’t miss you and the City (at least mine) is pretty slow….even with employee promotions so don’t worry!
I say reach out to the hiring Managers not HR. Send a email asking for an update, sound professional.
1. Extra delay during holidays is very normal. If you’ve been selected, they’re doing reference calls and background checks when all those involved people are out on vacation. And to be honest, states right now are bracing for huge losses in federal dollars and are freezing hiring.
It’s becoming the unprofessional epidemic Business practice now; l can’t wait to see how this employment scene is going to be coming 2025 under a new regimen.
Well, I was ghosted for a good 3 week. Was hopeful but eventually I was let go due to "change of management decision"
I heard back from HR. Was told they have not made a decision yet and should have one this week or next. Thanks for all the replies.
No that is NOT normal the HR job industry is failing at an alarming level. HR employees are under qualified and lazy at best.
