Do a search on LinkedIn and use the language filter to find people who know your native language. Contact them in English and say what you said here. They may be more sympathetic to your struggle and might help you get in.
Thank you, I never thought of that. I will do that today!
As a fellow not English native speaker I can relate to your struggles. But after thinking about it I came to a realization: my English doesn’t need to be perfect. I speak 2 other languages apart from my native one and as such I should be proud and wear the tiny language mistakes as badges of honor.
Additionally, chances are that you are harder on yourself about it than others and that that is actually what is blocking you from showing that a not perfect english is no reason to disregard your talents.
Finding a job can be stressful, interviews in other languages are hard, but keep reminding yourself that you have the skills and that actually it is impressive that you made the effort to learn another language; and just move ahead, mistakes and all. You’ll find a good company that will see through that soon enough. Just stay strong ;)
I have been here for more than a decade and still struggle as an introvert and due to my fear of public speaking. However, we need to remember that being multilingual already proves that we are smart! Confidence, being clear and to the point, and continuous practice help!
YES!! Could not agree more!!
Personally, I am interested in hiring designers from all backgrounds & languages, as long as:
- they are strong in product design
- they can present their work clearly, and consult effectively
- they collaborate well with others to produce compelling designs
Some of the most talented designers I have met are international people; any language -- or cultural -- difference is not a deal breaker, if the above is true.
Ugh, I’m so sorry to hear you’re having a tough time. Have you received feedback from the people you’re interviewing with that the slight language barrier (which is not an issue in my opinion!) is a problem for them?
I agree with the above note on sharing this info so people understand where you’re coming from. And for what it’s worth: I think having a designer who is bilingual (and possibly with a different cultural POV) is a huge benefit not a barrier. Maybe positioning yourself that way, up front, will help? Feeling insecure about language and interviewing can also effect the way you show up in the interviews — so having a plan to address these areas will also help you feel more confident and at ease when interviewing.
If you want to hop on zoom and chat about how to talk about your portfolio in interviews or how to answer certain interview questions, I’d be more than happy to support!! DM me anytime :)
I hear you. I think I lost so many opportunities because of that. But landed a few of them too. It is harder but you will find someone that can see your talent past the unusual accent.
I totally get you! English is my second language and the same happened to me 5 years ago when I moved here.
I have had 3 jobs since then and I think I got to the point where I am confident enough to be on interviews! Well, at least virtual interviews 😅
I am more than happy to have a virtual chat with you and tell you my experience and some tips if you want!
Could you share how you started looking for a job in the U.S.? Did you use any other platforms than LinkedIn?
DM me your LinkedIn. I might be hiring a designer in the future. Also happy to mock interview you for practice and give you feedback. Practicing your English situationally will give you the confidence. That's all you need.
