I recently was offered $71,400 and countered at $75,000. Three days passed at at 2pm on Friday I get an email from the HR rep blackberry stating “How does $72,500 sound?”. We have a follow up call on Tuesday. Because it was in a question form I assume I can negotiate more. If they aren’t able to come up to $75k would you try for more PTO or a sign on bonus or guaranteed bonus? Something I don’t think they’d go for. I had two interviews.

Depends how bad you wanna risk losing a job over $75 every 2 weeks

likehelpful

Personally, I would only be countering in $10k increments. Anything less than that would make you appear cheap.

Aside from that, I think the company you’re negotiating with is a big red flag if they’re pushing back for only $3,600…If it was me, I would reconsider even joining that firm (think about your future bonuses, will they cheap out on that too?)

It’s an employee’s market, you can do better

like

OOoh this is solid advice. I am going to try this from now on. Thank you for sharing.

Frankly $2,500 isn’t moving the needle in the long run. If this is a job where you can learn a ton and sets you up for a good trajectory just take it

likesmart

I'd ask them why they're so hesitant over $3,600. Are they unsure about me, questioning my value/ability, etc? If they hesitate over such a small amount (less than 5% of salary you asked for) , then you're looking at poor raises/promotions/growth in the future with them.

like

I’m guessing they don’t want me come in making more than their current team or their “job grade band”

$3,600 is not that much if you ask me. If they can't agree with $3600 more in thee negotiation, much more when it comes to bonuses and raise?

helpful

Bonuses and PTO are usually not negotiable. Since they are based on company policy, I only negotiate for the base. But the offer still sounds good to me. You can just negotiate after 6 months or a year for a raise.

Really? That's great. I'll also try this next time :)

That's a pretty good compromise offer. But, yes, you can still try to negotiate for additional benefits.

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? I work at a mid tier firm in an audit group of ~20 people. We’ve recently had two seniors and a manager leave, and I just found out another senior with a ton of big jobs is leaving in three weeks. I also just found out I’m being promoted to senior with a raise of 10%. In light of all these departures though, I kind of want to ask for more.... should I? And what % raise is appropriate? Any insight appreciated!
