Well, it got a little awkward when I realized he wasn’t looking down to read my resume, he had just fallen asleep.
OMG!!!
I had two interviewers flirt with each other while interviewing me. It was awkward. Not only did I sit through all that cringe, I wasn’t offered the job to compensate for that moment that I didn’t want to be a part of.
As interviewer:
Had the person call 20 minutes late from what sounded like a phonebooth on the side of the road (cars and gravel and engine sounds) apologizing saying they were late and asked if I could wait 15 more minutes. I say ok.
They then call me about 35 minutes later from what sounded like a hotel lobby with terrible reception. I asked if they were ready or wanted to reschedule. They said they were ready. I proceed to introduce myself etc. Then I ask the first technical question. The interviewer says nothing for a moment and then proceeds to apologize and says they are withdrawing their application and hangs up.
As interviewee:
My cat jumped into my lap while on a video interview.
I recently had an interview where the manager just talked at me for 30 minutes. Did not ask me one question about myself or my resume. I did get offered the job but I think that interview should have been telling lol.
5+ years ago, I interviewed with PwC for a role that wouldn't have been a good fit anyway. I had definitely not practiced my "why I'm looking at leaving" answers, so I proceeded to complain about KPMG for probably 5-10 minutes. I didn't get the offer.
Different job and company, but I once had a manager misread my resume, and grill me on my tableau/alteryx experience despite the resume explicitly calling out that those were both weeklong trainings and that I hadn't had the chance to actually use them in daily work.
Funny, your complaints about KPMG probably resonated with the PwC interviewers bc they have the same issues
I showed up for my interview, which was arranged by a recruiter. The recruiter didn't show up, and I didn't have the name of the person who I would ultimately be interviewing with. I sat in the lobby for 30 minutes until the receptionist was finally able to figure it out. The interview went well, but at the end the manager said something along the lines of, "You really shouldn't show up to an interview 30-45 minutes late." I'm glad he said something, so I was able to clear it up, and I did end up getting hired. But man...talk about stressful and frustrating.
My sister was asked to pitch a stock in an IB interview which she did well on and then the interviewer followed by asking her the ticker and she didn’t know, guy laughed in her face
When I was in undergrad interviewing for my first finance internship, I was asked very specific finance terms and formulas to recite. In panic, I flipped through the textbook to find the answers and the interviewer said “I can hear you flipping through your book” - absolutely killed my confidence and the rest was a train wreck
Yikes.
1. A group interview for Grant Thornton where the kid I worked with was like that one kid in your class that always raised their hand / liked the sound of their voice too much. The interviewer was observing us and visually cringing as he didn’t let me contribute or talk for 40 minutes. At one point the interviewer covered his face and groaned and then ushered us out.
2. Accenture interview where the guy was just being a dick. Asked ‘what’s the deal with your GPA shouldn’t it be higher’…it was a 3.7+. Same interview the guy didn’t ask me about my work experience just grilling me on my volunteer experience for 40 minutes.
3. My first interview ever for small RE developer. The guy just sat typing and said ‘usually people take notes and ask questions it’s alarming you’re not’.
I usually get the micro aggressions as black male, example, “You really speak well” or “ You’re a smart guy”.
I used to get that a lot as a young bw working in call centers. “You look different than you sound on the phone.”
Had a case interview for a strategy role with Intel during which I was asked to make recommendations to help a company with high production costs compete with a rival that could produce virtually identical products at a much lower cost. In retrospect the case was a clear stand-in for Intel competing with AMD.
My answer was for the company to sell its assets to the more efficient rival, return capital to investors, and close shop. Safe to say I didn't get the job.
I was quizzed on the geography of a city / all my favorite restaurants bc I wasn’t originally from the area and they wanted to make sure I knew it
I didn’t even get a rejection. They just ghosted me.
But I was able to provide favorite restaurants, neighborhoods I’d want to live in, and a plan for building my network in that city
One where the interviewer was basically just talking s*** on my company at the time and our clients and was basically trying to lead me into doing the same
Lol sounds like every interview
I had one interview with a bank and the interviewer told me I was not "educated enough to be able to serve their high profile clients."
how rude!
Had back to back interviews for an internship at a hedge fund and PE firm.
Talked about my interest in investing in the public markets for a what felt like 5 minutes before the analyst cut me off by asking: “you do know what a PRIVATE equity firm does, right?”
At the end of an interview I asked what were the next steps if they decided to move forward with me in the position. He flat out said I wouldn't be getting hired. When I asked why he said he had another call and dropped off the line. Three weeks later I received an email from the HR department that said they wanted me to do the next stage of the interview (interview 3 out of 5). I ended up pulling my resume.
Another was when I was just out of college, and I was waiting in a conference room for 30 minutes for the manager to arrive. He sat down for a few minutes, and the assistant manager who seemed to really like me started asking questions. After the 2nd question the manager said "this is a waste of my time" and left. The assistant manager apologized and continued on. I was ghosted after.
Last year. Internal interview for a position well above mine. The woman didn’t even turn on her camera and kept “reminding me” that I couldn’t apply to another job within the year. At the end she said she only interviewed me bc her boss made her.
Horrible experience, but I still have our chat on Teams, so I won’t forget her name.
