Odd as it may seem, things like that happen because companies will pay new arrivals more. It's an economic phenomenon that even has a name, wage inversion. As to whether you can get a raise based on that, that's probably unlikely. Noting someone else's salary as a reason for a raise usually doesn't work. If you can make an affirmative case for yourself you'd probably have a better chance.
i learned that lesson hard earlier on in my career. i was lowballed when the recruiter asked what my current salary was and i replied like an idiot (this was before it became illegal to ask, at least in california at the time). so i was about $20k below the midpoint in my salary range i had come to find out when they posted the salary bands for the company.
i did my best to make an argument that i deserved closer to market rate but it did nothing. i still only got my 2-3% and eventually left for a job where i made a $60k leap in base and more in total comp.
your chances of getting a significant bump are a lot better if you leave, or get them to match an external offer.
Don't use what someone else is being paid at the company as justification for your raise. Ask to talk one-on-one and request a raise based on your contributions to the company, and the market rate for your position/experience level in your area. Unfortunately, companies do often pay new hires more, so it might be worth considering if it's time for you to job hunt and get that pay raise somewhere else.
Something similar happened to me. I brought it up to my manager, and they escalated it to HR. After a follow-up, HR got back to me and I ended up receiving a raise that acknowledged my experience with the company. The best part is that it was made retroactive to the hiring date of the new employee.
So I'd say it may be worth talking about it with your manager or HR at least to make sure it's all in line with policies.
Quit and have them refer you back so you can renegotiate your salary 😂
There’s more than just a resume and you need to look at your friends experience versus jaws. Tell me of the market and what it’s paying which is different
