Recruiters want to close deals. And they get a fee usually based on the first year base or compensation. So let’s say the company offered you $200k base plus $50k moving expenses. And you want $225k and $75k moving expenses. For you that $25k difference in base is going to compound annually. So 4 years later that’s an additional $100K in your pocket.
But the recruiter only gets a 1x hit. So the recruiter has decided S/HE is willing to take $200K for their work. They don’t care about the extra $25K. It’s a rounding error and they work for the company. So they would rather stick you with $200K … so they don’t have to go back to the company and negotiate on your behalf… they think it will be better for their relationship with the company… and they’ll get passed another two, three, ten retained searches.
Once your package meets the compensation minimum the recruiter wants to accept … the recruiter will work against you to close the deal and preserve the relationship with the company. I wouldn’t take it personally … it’s just how the game works. The recruiter doesn’t have any power to say yes or no to anything you request. So just tell them to communicate the counter offer or you will do it directly with the hiring manager (that ought to piss em off lol).
In the end your greatest leverage is to walk. If you can actually walk and do it … then the recruiter will work again to save the deal because they want to get paid.
"Out of line"? That is aggressive language meant to sound like an authority. Recruiters are a partnership. The goal was to quiet you. Don't sell yourself short!
