Yep. That’s ADHD.
I try really hard to ride the waves of productivity; my family gives me grace to work late/early if I’m on a streak and I give myself guilt free permission to hyper focus on work.
On the flip, if I’m not in the zone and can’t catch it because I’ve put in my 40+, I give myself permission to go easy and rest.
Is it ideal, no, but that’s why it’s a disability.
Create false deadlines that are earlier to trick your brain. Also, try the “pomodoro technique” which slices up big tasks into small chunks and regularly inserts leisure time as rewards.
Yes, but I've found ways to self-set deadlines to force the urgency. Sadly the quality of my work is better too under pressure so I just live with it. I go into ultra productivity and get about a week or two of work done in 24/48 hours.
Set your own internal deadlines. It’s the only way.
Hard at first, because the true urgency isn’t the same. But if you can “gamify” the dynamic, it changes everything. If you enjoy challenges, make these deadlines your own challenge hurdles. Takes some practice to fully plug in to the mindset (give yourself some grace and keep at it, have faith in it), but once you embrace it, it’s life-changing.
Think about it—all deadlines are arbitrary in some way. Clients will often upend a timeline. So pick the days on the calendar and make them YOUR deadlines!
Yes, that's how I work. It's all or nothing.
To add to the deadlines, make yourself accountable to someone else for the intermediate deadlines.
For example when accepting an assignment let your client know that you’ll send a review copy a couple days in advance.
So me. I got absolutely nothing done last week. Then this morning I thought I had a 9am 1:1 where I needed to show progress. I worked from 7:45-8:30 before I realized the 1:1 had been postponed until tomorrow. I had completed 3/4 of my work and now I sit procrastinating on the last 25% because… tomorrow…
Here too—try internalizing your own deadlines, which you did! But then you let yourself be impacted by the extension, procrastinated. Think about it—your own deadlines are yours. They can be unshakable where the exterior deadlines can always change, wreak havoc to your mental state, create changing parameters impacting you.
It may seem silly, but internalizing gives you full control. Think about that—does more control help your attitude towards your work? I find that it helps me. There’s something about an external dead that throws me.
Internal deadlines empower.
