No I’d say it’s pretty rare from my experience. Most often when hiring new hires from campus, the offices have a certain number of interns or new hires they’re capped at. So yes, technically, there could be no open spot for you in that other office you want to move to. They might be able to make a spot for you but only if you have people behind you saying you’re top talent and to make a spot for you. Campus recruiters are often filling for a market so they have insight into what other offers are going out and who is likely accepting or unsure so if they’re advising you that it’s not super feasible, it’s based on them having a spot for you where you were recruiting and probably don’t where you want to go now.
Big cities is significantly easier to get than a small city like Little Rock.
I did this back in 2016 and it was annoying. They eventually agreed to a transfer but with a start date 1.5 years out (I was in a MSA program at the time so needed to start sooner). I had to get an offer from another b4 in the city I wanted for them to agree to the timing I wanted.
Yes I don’t recall this being a distinction at the time I was applying but it could be now
the sooner you bring it up to the recruiter the better. it's likely going to happen if you tell the recruiter so they can plan accordingly. this also assumes the destination office would have a need for a new staff (which is highly likely).
Meeting with recruiter on Thursday to discuss. Want to move from smaller office to nyc as it’s always been my goal to live in nyc out of college
I would say it all depends on how good you are and how you play the game. First, I agree with above that the recruiter and local teams bears the most part of expenses so why would they let you go to another office? What I would recommend is to go through the internship and get an offer first. Assuming you are not starting right away, then one you are 6 months away from start date, ask them to move to the other office. If you have a legit reason or make one, they will move you to other office or let you work remotely from there.
It’s also fair that the team receiving you may want to interview you first. Sometimes people have to turn down their offer and go through an abbreviated interview process for the office/ service line they want.
How did you approach your coach about it so that they reached out to a partner at your target office? I feel like my counselor/coach doesn’t fully have my back on this and she didn’t explicitly say if my intern office offer would or wouldn’t be revoked given my desire to transfer
As long as the proposed office has a need, at least in EY the HR will initiate the transfer regardless of what your counselor tells
No one wants to be in assurance right now, trust me there is always a need
I did last year. Interned for a office in Cali and told them I’d like to be considered for the full time offer in NYC. My recruiter was very nice and she made it possible even though they said they’d have preferred for me to intern at the same office I start full time. So I don’t think it’s an issue.
Kpmg and very late. About 2 weeks before the end of my internship but don’t do what I did. The more time the better. It was just complicated for me and hadn’t made up my mind.
Saw someone do this. They asked us for our top three offices halfway through the internship. The intern listed 3 offices (none of which were our office). I think the point was that you list your current office as number one, but then lost two other offices as back ups in case spots filled up or there was need elsewhere. No offer extended at the end. The partners took it as a slap in the face.
