I was a registered rep at an Investment Bank and was recently let go for performance reasons. Truth be told, I was being harassed by two male colleagues who constantly micromanaged me and excluded me from team meetings. I was dinged for things like double spacing and my manager gave me the worst performance review of my career in December. When I started standing up for myself, my manager (MD) didn’t like it, and I was let go shortly after. I am afraid my U5 is going to get ruined with this. Ctd

Double spacing after each sentence? Like this?

I am in the same situation although haven’t been terminated (yet) - contact an employment law attorney ASAP. And when they tell you they keep a percentage, ask what is taxable. Depends on the case, but for me, it’s not taxable so the money the attorney gets would have been paid in taxes anyways. As to your U5, you can expunge a defamatory reason through FINRA. Look up the Singer blog (Google Singer FINRA U5)

like

I appreciate you!

I asked HR for multiple things: severance, my bonus which was due in 2 weeks, what the compliance department was going to mark my U5 as. I received a negative response for everything - got no severance, no response for my bonus, HR said compliance department will not reach out to me before filing my U5. My banked PTO from last year is also not getting paid out. I feel hurt, cheated, and backstabbed. Is my career in finance over?

like

I think they teed it up for you. “My skillset is to bring in and provide excellent service to clients using my interpersonal, insightful, empathetic, and analytical abilities and experience. They wanted me to make coffee.”

like

I terms of what we send to FINRA we will list what HR tells us, but as previous posters say it can be protested. So speak to a lawyer to protect yourself.

One thing I would say, people have pulled things FAR WORSE than what they are accusing you of, and got jobs in the industry pretty quickly.

Keep your head up and keep fighting, I’ll be honest most firms do not have the appetite to deal with lawyers and will start to backtrack once you start bringing the receipts.

like

Thanks so much for your response! I pushed my compliance department and I just got a response saying the reason they plan to put is
“Discharge: Mismatched between skillset and business needs”. How punitive do you think this is going to be as I look for other roles that require FINRA registration?

Double spacing could be indirect ageism. I've mainly seen older colleagues use double spacing. I've heard of stories on social media where people were singled out but I haven't personally seen it at my workplace.

One tip to check for the double spacing since you may encounter a similar issue again in future workplaces is to do a Replace All. Type two spaces in what you're looking for and replace with a single space.

My ethnicity makes me a minority but I would never join a minority affinity/business resource group. I think it creates separation which can lead to an “us versus them” mentality - a step backwards. Aren’t we supposed to respect or work towards respecting each other without the need to form institutions to make things “official”? I’d like to hear some thoughts from people who disagree and if they are in these groups or not

I thought that too of some of the middle eastern and Caribbean island managers I worked with on a job once, but they turned out to be the most supportive and inquisitive. But I feel ya, sometimes you can sense if they'll be hostile toward you. But I don't give af at this point. In the end, they're still professionals working for Big 4 and probably won't dare say anything to you about it, even if it does bother them. Way I see it, ignorant people like that don't go very far working in our industry.

My coworker constantly undermines me and makes me look bad in team meetings. Should I try and address this directly with them or should I go to my manager first?

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. Leadership seem to not want to hear the truth so people tell them what they want to hear and if you don’t middle management gets pissed at you. I am seriously thinking about looking somewhere else. My question is how do you answer the “why are you looking to leave” question without bad mouthing your current company?

What do you do for winter shoes and commuting?

I walk a total ~20 mins in between train/bus stations and then getting from the stop in the loop to the office.

What do I do come wintertime for boots? Do you wear them while you're in the office? Or do you bring dress shoes with you to change in to? I wear a suit to work, so what boots would be good for winter but also look decent with a suit? This is my first winter in Chicago (a socal transplant)
