In the future I wouldn’t do this. It never looks good to moan or air dirty laundry or go on and on. Find a better way to politely communicate the big reason you’re leaving.
^ This. All you have to say from now on is dodge the question and say some safe PC answer like, “Many of the recent changes within WPP have reaffirmed my desire for new opportunities with an organization like [agency] who believe that ‘the work’ comes first”.
Accomplishes each of these:
- avoids tarnishing current employer
- perfectly acceptable reason even in more ‘normal times’ of industry stability
- says that you are an ideal worker drone creative hire who puts ‘the work’ first
- subtle compliment to [agency]’s reputation
It’s funny and if it’s any consolation , I’m more and more open to hearing the real story of why people are looking now than i was ten years ago. Shows me what other agencies are really like.
I hope you made a good impression as well. Good luck!
Hope you were being interviewed by a fellow Gen-Z with your same commutation values.
Because to Millennials+ you might be perceived as an unaware gossip.
And that doesn’t fly in Acct, Strat.
Dunno about creative dept.

It’s not a generational divide. It’s a maturity issue. This industry is about branding, discretion, communication, and — importantly — politics. Using your interview as a therapy session to unload about how terrible your last employer was shows a lack of understanding how agencies work.
“Just looking for an opportunity to work with different clients, learn new things, and take on a new challenge. I’m very intrigued by [agency name does here]”
this is so tempting to do but in my opinion bad form and people remember it. I’ve been the one hiring & recall this type of exchange. An interview is not about honesty of the tribulations we’ve had. Basic transparency is needed, sure but even ‘It wasn’t a good fit’ is the wrong approach. Everything could be used against you: (why wasn’t he/she a good fit)… Best approach is to focus on the current opportunity with genuine enthusiasm, “I’m looking to learn more about XYZ, I’ve always admired this company, I’m ready to try new things,” etc.
